USMNT forward Haji Wright scores for Coventry, but goal overshadowed by late injury

U.S. international Haji Wright continued his impressive run of form for Coventry, finding the net in a hard fought draw with league leaders Sunderland. The forward, playing as part of a two striker setup under new manager Rhys Carr, provided a fine poacher's finish to pull a goal back for his side and kick off an impressive comeback. A late second goal from Jack Rudoni secured a 2-2 draw, less than a week after the Sky Blues controversially dismissed manager Mark Robins.

Wright has been in fine form of late, scoring four and assisting one in his last five games in the Championship. Saturday's finish took him to seven goals on the season and he is on pace to eclipse his 16 from last year. He is the Sky Blues' top scorer this campaign.

However, with the ankle injury picked up late in the match Saturday, it's unknown how it will effect the club going forward. What's certain, though, is he will miss the USMNT November Nations League camp as a result of it.

Speaking to BBC Coventry & WarwickShire, Carr confirmed that Wright was set to be called up, but that the late injury would see him miss the camp.

"I've just started a brief conversation with him," said Carr. "Obviously it'll take time to assess it properly... He's got a bag of ice on his ankle at the moment., the outcome and the assessment things like that is too soon, soon to say. But yeah, he would have been involved [with the USMNT]."

The interim manager called him "terrific," and was disappointed to see him depart late.

"He can cause people real problems, so [the injury] is disappointing," Carr said. "But obviously, we go into an international break now, where you might have a bit of time to assess it, to recover and hopefully be alright."

Wright is one of three forwards that will now be out of the November camp for the USMNT, alongside both Folarin Balogun and Josh Sargent.

The 26-year-old will be evaluated by Coventry medical staff over the coming days, determining the extent of his injury. It remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined.
