Report: Cruz Azul target AC Milan striker Luka Jović in ambitious summer move

Cruz Azul are reportedly eyeing a bold move in the Liga MX summer transfer window, setting their sights on Serbian striker Luka Jović, currently under contract with AC Milan. The club is looking to reinforce its attack ahead of the 2025 Apertura and views Jović - once a marquee signing at Real Madrid - as a high-impact addition.

According to Súper Deportivo, Initial talks have reportedly begun between Cruz Azul and Milan, with the Mexican side encouraged by the positive relationship between both clubs, especially after their recent dealings for Luka Romero. Sources close to the discussions suggest that Jović is open to a potential switch to Mexican football.

One of the possible departures for Cruz Azul is Giorgos Giakoumakis, who has lost playing time to forwards Ángel Sepúlveda and Mateusz Bogusz.

While nothing has been finalized, Cruz Azul are exploring multiple scenarios, including a loan with a purchase option or a permanent transfer, depending on Milan’s stance. Jović’s current deal is set to expire at the end of June, though Milan holds the option to extend it by one more year.

Jović, 27, is known for his strength, aerial ability, and finishing inside the box. He began his professional journey at Red Star Belgrade, moved to Benfica in 2015, and later gained prominence at Eintracht Frankfurt, where his breakout performances earned him a big-money move to Real Madrid in 2019.

Jovic's time in Spain was inconsistent, with only five goals and three assists across 51 appearances for Los Blancos. He later returned briefly to Frankfurt before playing for Fiorentina, where he scored 13 times in 50 matches. Since 2023, Jović has been part of Milan’s roster, netting 13 goals in 47 games, competing for minutes with players like Santiago Giménez and Tammy Abraham.

It’s been several days since Cruz Azul lifted the Champions Cup title, yet the club has remained silent regarding the status of manager Vicente Sánchez, whose departure was widely expected following the final against the Vancouver Whitecaps - regardless of the result.

Reports had suggested for weeks that Sánchez would leave his post after the tournament, and negotiations with Argentine manager Nicolás Larcamón are reportedly well underway. Now, the question is whether an official announcement is just hours away, or if the board is reconsidering and could opt to retain the Uruguayan coach after the recent success.

Meanwhile, Cruz Azul already know the date of their Apertura 2025 debut - July 12 at home against Mazatlán FC.
