Ranked: Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford & the 10 players Man Utd should sell this summer to usher in much-needed squad overhaul

Manchester United are close to bidding farewell to one of their worst ever seasons in the modern era but soon they will be looking towards their next big battle, the one that takes place in the transfer market.

After a harrowing campaign in which the Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League group stage and failed miserably to mount a challenge to finish in the top four, it has become glaringly obvious that several players are no longer up to the standards United should aim for.

And while standards had been allowed to slip by a board that often took its eye off the ball, the club's new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues will not stand for it any longer. It was reported last week that United are ready to listen to offers for almost the entire squad, with only young stars Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo protected from the clear-out.

It is also believed that Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martinez and Andre Onana are extremely unlikely to leave, but every other player, including Marcus Rashford, could potentially be up for sale.

Here are the players United should be prioritising getting rid of when the transfer window opens in June...

  • Christian Eriksen Man Utd 2023-24Getty Images

    10Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen was a transfer that made a lot of sense at the time, a technically adept and highly experienced player on a free transfer. He contributed a lot last season, even if he did tire in games and rarely lasted 90 minutes.

He has struggled much more in his second campaign at Old Trafford and despite remaining fit since the turn of the year, he has started just two games in all competitions since a concerning performance against Tottenham. The Dane has only one year left on his contract and even a free transfer would make sense, given how little Ten Hag has trusted him recently.

    9Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Wan-Bissaka's time at United can roughly be summed up in three stages. At first he looked to be a costly mistake due to his £50m ($62m) transfer fee and the fact he contributed very little in an attacking sense. But then last year he rediscovered his knack for one-v-one defending and usurped Diogo Dalot as the team's first-choice right-back.

But this season Dalot has re-established himself as Ten Hag's best right-sided defender and Wan-Bissaka has looked increasingly vulnerable, almost costing United their place in the FA Cup final with a disastrous display against Coventry.

The club triggered his one-year contract extension clause in January and his new deal expires in 2025. It means United have one more chance to recover some of the money they spent on him and they need to take it.

  • Anthony Martial Manchester United 2023-24Getty

    8Anthony Martial

The Frenchman has turned into a laughing stock in the last couple of years, incapable of staying fit for even a handful of games and often struggling to make any impact when he does play, except to rile the fans.

The good news for United is that this one takes care of itself, as Martial's contract with the club expires in June, bringing his at best disappointing and at worst exasperating time at the club to an end.

Perhaps United should have realised that the Morocco international was not up to Premier League standard when they faced barely any competition to sign him and were able to negotiate a loan with Fiorentina. He has looked woefully off the pace in most games and Ten Hag has clearly noticed, starting him just once in all competitions in 2024.

United paid Fiorentina a loan fee of €10m (£8.5m), which includes a purchase option set at €25m (£21m). They would be fools to trigger it and at least this transfer can be written off as a mistake that only haunts them for one year, unlike some other players they tied down to long contracts.

  • Raphael Varane Manchester United 2023-24Getty

    6Raphael Varane

It was hoped that the serial-winning Frenchman would prove to be the final piece of the jigsaw for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and use his experience and class to turn United into title contenders. However, he has been unable to reproduce the performances he was famous for in Spain in England, and he has also proved incapable of staying fit for long, playing just 61 percent of league games since signing from Real Madrid in 2021.

United have decided against triggering the one-year extension clause in his contract and Varane has been free to negotiate with other clubs as of January. Given his age and injury record, not to mention his huge salary, there is little to gain from keeping him around.

  • Marcus Rashford Manchester United 2023-24Getty

    5Marcus Rashford

No one would have expected Marcus Rashford to be on the transfer list just one year after signing a lucrative contract following his best ever season. But as the season has gone on, the case for him to be sold has become ever more compelling. The striker has had a miserable time on the pitch, with just 12 goal contributions in all competitions despite remaining mostly fit.

His all-round play has been even worse, neglecting off-ball work and barely attempting to tackle or chase down opponents. And then there is his off-pitch behaviour, most notably going to a nightclub after the humiliating defeat to Manchester City in October and missing training in January after an alcohol-fuelled night out in Belfast.

Rashford is one of the few United players that could generate a big transfer fee and Paris Saint-Germain is one club that could afford him. As gut-wrenching as it is to imagine a homegrown star like Rashford leaving the club of his life, a departure now seems like the best solution for everyone.

  • Jadon Sancho Man Utd 2023-24Getty Images

    4Jadon Sancho

Sancho may have shown that he is still a top-class footballer on his day in recent weeks with Borussia Dortmund but his Champions League heroics do not change the fact that he had a hugely disappointing time at United, failing to shine under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick or Erik ten Hag.

The fact he refused to apologise to Ten Hag after calling him out on social media also portrayed a lack of commitment to the club that had invested so much money and time in him. Even if he ends up inspiring Dortmund to win the Champions League, he does not have a future at United, with or without Ten Hag. However, his recent performances should help raise his value and allow United to make back some of the money spent on another hugely disappointing and costly transfer.

  • Casemiro-Man-UtdGetty

    3Casemiro

One of United's best players of last season has become one of the worst performers of this campaign in a quite remarkable drop-off. Casemiro instantly lifted spirits around the club and raised standards but this season it has felt as though he is dragging the team down. He is painfully slow in comparison to his opponents and his passing and decision-making has become increasingly sloppy.

But the worst thing about Casemiro is the huge outlay United committed when they bought him from Real Madrid in August 2022 as a panic buy, paying an initial £60m ($75m) plus more in add-ons and agreeing to pay him in the region of £20m ($25m) per season over four years. At 32 years of age and with 620 games for club and country in his muscles, Casemiro has little sell-on value, meaning the Saudi Pro League is the club's only real hope of getting him off the wage bill.

  • Antony(C)GettyImages

    2Antony

One Premier League goal all season sums up how dire Antony has been for United. He had a pretty disappointing debut campaign after arriving for £85m ($106m) from Ajax but his second year has emphatically underlined that he is not good enough for the club.

And that's without mentioning the negative headlines he has created off-the-pitch, from damaging accusations from three women to unsporting behaviour after scraping victory against Coventry.

United will have to swallow a big loss as no club in their right mind would even consider paying half of the transfer fee they parted with in 2022. But it is a loss worth taking in order to put one of the club's worst ever signings behind them.

  • Mason Greenwood Manchester UnitedGetty

    1Mason Greenwood

Greenwood was one of the most talented players to ever come through United's academy but when he was arrested in January 2022 after being linked with shocking accusations on social media, his career was thrown into jeopardy.

Although all charges against him were dropped in February 2023, Greenwood remains a highly controversial figure and bringing him back would be too damaging for the club's image, especially as INEOS are trying to change the perception of the club and raise standards.

The striker has managed to get his career back on track in Spain and United should be able to find a buyer in the summer, even at a reduced fee. They should look to seal the deal and finally put this troubling saga behind them.
