    WHAT HAPPENED?

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United future had reportedly been hinging on the Red Devils getting a positive result at Villa Park against Unai Emery's high-flying team. However, United were as toothless as they have been throughout the season as they failed to get all three points for the fifth straight game in all competitions. Fans are now criticizing INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe for delaying the decision to sack Ten Hag.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

X user @YanitedCynical said: "If INEOS don’t sack Ten Hag, they’re worse than the Glazers. Woodward would’ve had him on the next flight back to Ajax."

@sampilger said: "The end of Ten Hag’s reign feels like it is just being dragged out now with United a humiliating 14th in the table after yet another lifeless and clueless performance with almost no goal threat. It is a shambles and something needs to quickly change."

United fan @utdbrxy said: "If INEOS are watching this performance and think there’s hope for Ten Hag then we’ve got a big problem".

ESPN's @MarkOgden_ wrote on X: "Whether Ten Hag stays or goes as Man United manager, he's been let down badly by the people who scouted his forwards. Hojlund and Zirkzee nowhere near United level".

@Malachians said: "Utd definitely have an identity under Ten Hag, they are now a team who rarely win or who rarely score. If you have more patience to give then you’re a saint. Personally, I’m completely spent with toggling between anger, despair and complete boredom."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

As per OptaJoe, Manchester United have now reached their lowest points tally in the Premier League ever after seven matchdays as Ten Hag's side now sit on just eight points. The Red Devils last slumped to that embarrassing low in the old First Division back in 1989-90. United are currently sat in 14th place in the Premier League standings and the Dutch coach may be on borrowed time after another damaging setback.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR TEN HAG AND MAN UTD?

INEOS and the Manchester United board now have to make the crucial decision, and with the October international break now set to come into effect, they will have enough time to make a decision on the Dutchman and even draw up plans for who will take up the mantle of head coach in his stead.
