Man City's stance on Gianluigi Donnarumma transfer revealed amid goalkeeper uncertainty

The eight-time Premier League champions are not expected to move for Donnarumma in the remaining week of the summer transfer window unless they find themselves needing to replace Ederson. According to Sky Sports, it is City's preference to reach next Monday's deadline with the veteran Brazilian still at the club, in addition to July signing Trafford. Where things could change is if Ederson, who is the final year of his contract, is seriously pursued by Galatasaray and wants to leave. Only then, would City likely pursue a goalkeeper, with Donnarumma an obvious option.

Ederson missed the opening game of the season through illness but returned to the matchday squad for Saturday's defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, with Trafford keeping his starting place. The England international put in a shaky performance, though, and made a costly error that led to Spurs' killer second goal of the game. Meanwhile, Donnarumma bid farewell to PSG fans on Friday night after Luis Enrique made the surprise decision to go in a different goalkeeping direction and the Italian himself issued a statement confirming his plan to leave the European champions.

Sky's update on City's interest in Donnarumma suggested that things haven't moved beyond an initial enquiry, which served to highlight that the Premier League side aren't willing to pay as much as the French club are asking - £35-43 million ($47-58m). It is also thought that recent reports of personal terms already being agreed with the player are wide of the mark.

The possibility of Donnarumma joining City hinges on Ederson. Unhelpfully, with Galatasaray the most interested suitor, the Turkish transfer window doesn't close until almost two weeks after the equivalent deadline for Premier League clubs. However, it feels unlikely City would sanction an exit after September 1 due to not being able to sign a replacement, and Ederson would know this.

Donnarumma's other options seem limited, with Manchester United closing in on Senne Lammens, Chelsea not showing much interest in a goalkeeper, and seemingly every other big club locked in between the sticks.
