    WHAT HAPPENED?

The 2025 All-Star Game between Liga MX and Major League Soccer is beginning to take shape, with the Mexican league announcing the first 14 players selected for the summer showcase. The match is set to be played on Wednesday, July 23, in Austin, Texas, just weeks after the start of the Apertura 2025.

The initial call-ups were revealed through the Liga MX’s Balón de Oro awards, as the league uses performances from the past two tournaments to determine eligibility. The preliminary roster includes two goalkeepers, four defenders, five midfielders, two forwards, and a pair of standout young players.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The full Liga MX squad will consist of 30 players, with 14 more to be chosen by the coach who wins Best Manager of the Year at the Ballon d’Or awards. The final two players will be selected by FMF Commissioner Mikel Arriola.

Sergio Ramos (Monterrey) and James Rodríguez (León) were not included in the initial list, raising questions about their future in Liga MX. While Ramos will feature with Monterrey in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, James will not, as León was disqualified from the tournament due to multi-ownership violations. Despite coach Eduardo Berizzo confirming James will stay with the club for the Apertura 2025, his exclusion from the All-Star list has fueled exit rumors.
