  • Kevin De Bruyne prefers MLS move over Saudi Pro League
  • Potential move would not be for winter transfer window
  • Negotiations are "far from advanced"
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester City's star attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne could be on the move with an eye on MLS as his preferred choice. The 33-year-old whose contract expires next June, has held preliminary talks with MLS expansion franchise San Diego FC over a switch to North America, according to GiveMeSport.

The six-time Premier League winner has been previously linked with Saudi Pro League sides, with the league's sporting director reportedly hoping to bring De Bruyne to the Middle East. Man City, meanwhile, are "keen" to keep De Bruyne beyond his contract, according to the report.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Bruyne has been repeatedly linked with a move upon the end of his contract. MLS interest was floated as recently as May, when it was revealed that San Diego were eager to make De Bruyne its first marquee signing ahead of its inaugural season in the league. The Southern California side have already announced the arrival of PSV and Mexico star Chucky Lozano on a multi-year contract. They will be boosted by the fact De Bruyne prefers MLS over a move to the Middle East, according to the report.

    DID YOU KNOW?

De Bruyne's playmaking is among the best the Premier League has seen. He had a 20-assist season during the 2019-20 campaign, which tied Thierry Henry's record and is the fastest player to reach 100 assists in England's top flight.

    WHAT NEXT FOR DE BRUYNE?

De Bruyne has endured an injury-impacted season so far. The Belgian picked up a groin problem against Inter in the Champions League on Sept. 12, and has not played since. Long term, his future remains uncertain, although it seems that San Diego's interest is legitimate should he be made available this summer.
