    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Henderson took the decision to sever ties with Liverpool in July 2023, with efforts to earn a European Championship spot cited among his reasons for joining Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League. A stint in the Middle East lasted just six months before agreeing to the termination of his contract and returning to Europe at Eredivisie giants Ajax.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

A spell in the Netherlands has not gone much better for Henderson, with injuries holding him back. As a result, The Athletic reports that Southgate has found no place for the hard-working midfielder in his Euros plans. England are expected to name 30 players in their provisional squad for this summer’s tournament in Germany.

    WHAT NEXT?

Henderson has captained England at times, in the absence of talismanic striker Harry Kane, but will be left watching on from afar when another major tournament gets underway. England will open their quest for continental glory against Serbia on June 16, with friendly dates against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland taken in prior to that.
