Harry Kane hails Bayern Munich victory as the Bundesliga giants secure first trophy in Supercup win over Borussia Dortmund

  • Kane celebrate early silverware

Bayern officially opened their 2026-27 account with a trophy as they overcame Dortmund to lift the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. In what was a stern test at the Signal Iduna Park, the Bavarian giants displayed both clinical finishing and defensive resilience to ensure Vincent Kompany’s tenure started with a piece of silverware. Kane, who remains the focal point of the Bayern attack, was quick to praise the team's application in a hostile environment, noting the psychological importance of defeating their biggest domestic rivals so early in the footballing calendar.

"It was an important win to start the season, especially away at Borussia Dortmund. It was a good way to start." The striker also reflected on the flow of the match, adding: “We had a few chances to put the game to bed. We didn’t manage it, so it remained at 2-0 despite our dominance. That’s always a dangerous result, because things can get tight again. That’s what then happened, but in the end we’re pleased it was enough," Kane said.

Tactical grit and debutant delight in Dortmund

The match saw Bayern take control in the first half through goals from Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise, though they were made to sweat late on when Fabio Silva pulled one back for the hosts. Kompany was full of praise for the physical condition and mental fortitude of his players, many of whom were thrown into the deep end following a staggered pre-season.

Kompany evaluated the performance by stating: “It was a very good first half. We also showed a lot of determination in the second half. You saw the heart and character of the team. Some of the guys had only trained a few times and played 90 minutes today – that’s impressive. The most important thing is the mentality, and that was spot on. We won today. From tomorrow focus turns to the next game. We’re pleased and happy today, but tomorrow we’re hungry again."

  • Neuer highlight championship mentality

Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who once again proved his worth with several key interventions, explained that the Supercup serves as a vital barometer for the season ahead. Having entered the competition as double winners, Bayern faced a Dortmund side determined to prove they could bridge the gap at the top of German football.

"It definitely feels good. I think the whole Bundesliga looks at what the champions do against the cup winners. We ended up as double winners so played against the second-best team in Germany. It’s always a good way to start the season. You then know roughly where you stand. It was another hard fight and we had to give our all to win this game. But I think the better team won today," Neuer stated.

Dortmund left to reflect on missed opportunities

For Dortmund, the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, particularly given their improved showing in the second period. Head coach Niko Kovac was vocal about the errors that allowed Bayern to seize the initiative, pointing specifically to a lapse in concentration just before the interval that led to Olise's goal.

"We made a decent start to the game. We then allowed Bayern to grow through our own mistakes and had to defend a lot. The second goal in added time before half-time was annoying, from our own throw. That was sort of the thing that annoyed me. At 1-0 down in our stadium we have the chance to come back. So, that annoyed me a lot, because we had the ball," Kovac noted.
