Erik ten Hag's Man Utd side set damning unwanted record in agonising stoppage-time defeat to Brighton

Joao Pedro's 95th minute winner for Brighton was the sixth time in the pace of two years that Erik ten Hag's United have been beaten by a goal scored after the 90th minute. No other club has recorded that many during the period in question.

United initially fell behind at the Amex Stadium when Danny Welbeck scored against his former club. An equaliser came from Amad Diallo, before Alejandro Garnacho thought he'd scored to put the Red Devils 2-1 in front, only for Joshua Zirkzee to tap the goal-bound ball in from an offside position. Pedro's last gasp header then resigned Ten Hag to a first Premier League defeat of 2024-25 in just the second week of the season.

Brighton are Manchester United's bogey side. Not only have the Seagulls won five of the last six Premier League meetings between the clubs, United have lost a higher percentage of games against them in the competition than against anyone else.

Things are not about to get any easier for United, with Liverpool visiting Old Trafford in the next game on September 1. Arne Slot is now the man in charge of the Merseysiders, but they remain a formidable opponent. Brighton's 100 per cent start in the Premier League will best severely tested when they travel to Arsenal the day before.
