Kaizer Chiefs still need ageing Bernard Parker and Siphiwe Tshabalala, says Steve Komphela

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Komphela says the team still need Bernard Parker's experience.

The 31-year-old striker has fallen further down the pecking order at Amakhosi after the arrival of Leonardo Castro from Mamelodi Sundowns during the recent transfer window.

Strikers Gustavo Paez and Ryan Moon, who has been a revelation for the Soweto giants this season, are both preferred ahead of Parker.

“Bernard will help. He is highly experienced - and on any given day, Bernard can play anywhere," Komphela said on IOL.

"He has got football brains. He understands how to effect the game with the ball and how to organise his teammates by giving confidence," he continued.

"We will benefit from that. It will just be a difficulty of making choices from Castro, Paez, (Dumisani) Zuma, Moon and him,” the former South Africa captain.

Parker, who has scored 23 goals in 72 South Africa caps, is one of the most experienced players in the current Amakhosi squad having won two PSL titles with the club.

“It is a nice headache again, but we welcome him back. He came through nicely (against Arrows). He held the ball nicely and you could see a man playing with confidence," Komphela indicated.

"I don’t remember him losing the ball and that’s what you want from Parker because when he doesn’t lose the ball he is deadly and will win a match for you," he added.

Parker and Siphiwe Tshabalala, who turns 35 this year, both made substitute appearances against Lamontville Golden Arrows in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

“His (Tshabalala) quality will never diminish," the former Free State Stars coach said.

“How we select the players will be in the best interest of both the club and the team. ‘Shabba’ is no different," Komphela indicated.

"There are a number of players that can do the job when he is not there. But every time ‘Shabba’ goes in, the difference is clear," he concluded.

Amakhosi will host Cape Town City in a league game at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
