I play for the team, not for myself - Maroons FC's Mukwala

Uganda and Maroons FC striker Steven Mukwala has revealed he always plays for the team and not for himself during game days.

Mukwala is the leading Ugandan Premier League (UPL) striker with 13 goals and says discipline has been key in as far as his season's exploits are concerned.

“I do maintain my discipline on and off the pitch and I put in a lot of personal hard work in my training sessions. On game day, I play for the team, not for myself,” Mukwala told Football256.

“Basically, I boost my confidence on a daily as I mind a lot of the information I consume because I know it has a huge effect on me, towards my mentality, attitude and physicality.”

With 13 goals to his name already, Mukwala is ahead of Vipers SC's Fahad Bayo and Ben Ocen of Police FC who are tied with 12 goals. The Vipers star, who is on loan to Maroons, further explained the importance of keeping good company.

“I also make sure I keep the right company around me. I mean positive people who can always encourage me to push harder and grow my confidence as well,” added the former Ssingo Ssaza striker.

Mukwala revealed how Maroons' playing style has helped him since his move from Vipers.

“Maroons as a team builds its style of play around every player since we work as a team. And this is very important as it helps everyone to gain confidence and carry out their responsibilities for the team,” continued the 21-year-old star.

Uganda head coach Johnathan McKinstry had included Mukwala in the African Nations Championship (Chan) squad whose training camp was called off due to the coronavirus issue. He explains how his training regime complements what they have been advised to do while at home.

“For me staying in the best shape is not so much of a challenge, I was part of the Chan camp where we have been given individual training regimes, and of course the club has also been supervising our fitness,” he concluded.

“I complement those regimes with my own personal workouts in order to stay in the best shape when football does return.”

The UPL was suspended when just five matches had remained for the season to conclude.
