Joey Veerman made his Borussia Dortmund debut on Saturday evening, coming on for the final half-hour of the German Super Cup defeat to Bayern Munich (1-2). The German media delivered a mixed verdict afterwards.
Veerman started on the bench and came on in the 63rd minute. The midfielder, who joined from PSV, replaced Felix Nmecha. Not every German outlet gave him a rating because he only played for half an hour. A few did, though.
Among them was SPOX. They gave Veerman a 3.5. It should be noted that 1 is the highest possible rating in Germany, and 6 the lowest. "Another new signing and debutant. He replaced Nmecha. Not that noticeable," was SPOX's brief explanation.
Sport.de gave Veerman a 4. "He was expected to reshape the passing in the centre, but in combination with his new team-mates still showed some problems with coordination. He is not yet the playmaker who dictates matters in midfield."
Meanwhile, local outlet RUHR24 wrote: "After coming on, the Dutchman was not particularly noticeable - neither in a positive nor a negative sense. Even so, it was immediately clear that the new signing wanted to bring structure to the play." Veerman received a 3 from the outlet.
Usually, the German Super Cup is contested by the league champions and the winners of the DFB-Pokal. But because Bayern won both trophies last season, the runners-up from the previous Bundesliga season were also allowed to feature: Dortmund.
At half-time Bayern were already 0-2 up through goals from Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise. Fábio Silva pulled one back in the second half, but it was not enough. Bayern won the trophy for the twelfth time in the club's history.
