Bayern Munich have won the German Super Cup for the second year running and for the 12th time in the club's history. In Dortmund, Vincent Kompany's side proved too strong for Joey Veerman's Borussia Dortmund, winning 2-1.
The German Super Cup is usually contested by the league champions and the winners of the DFB-Pokal. But with Bayern having won both trophies last season, Dortmund were also included as runners-up in last season's Bundesliga.
Veerman, meanwhile, started on the bench for Dortmund. The German club signed the 27-year-old midfielder from PSV for 22 million euros last week. Ismael Saibari, who was still Veerman's team-mate in Eindhoven last season, also began on the bench.
For a while, the game struggled to get going, but Bayern struck just before the half-hour. Nathaniel Brown, signed this summer from Eintracht Frankfurt for fifty million euros, fired into the near corner from around fifteen metres to make it 0-1.
Kobel then made a fine save to deny Luis Díaz the 0-2. Michael Olise still got that second goal before half-time, bundling the ball into the net after an impressive burst. In between, Ramy Bensebaini had a headed goal ruled out for offside.
After the break, Manuel Neuer produced a fine reflex save to stop Konstantinos Karetsas pulling one back. Dortmund were at least showing more than they had in the first half, and Karetsas had another go soon after, but sent it over.
With half an hour left, Veerman replaced Felix Nmecha. Not long after, another PSV player, Fábio Silva, made it 1-2 by turning in a low cross from Daniel Svensson. Dortmund could not find another response. They actually finished with ten men after Bensebaini's hard foul on fellow substitute Saibari.
