Safa lodges complaint against the Hawks over Danny Jordan investigation approach - 'the raid was unlawful'

The South African Football Association [SAFA] is taking the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (Hawks) to court over an “unlawful” raid at the association's offices against president Danny Jordan.The Hawks raided Safa offices in Johannesburg last month, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/danny-jordaan-hawks-raid-safa-house-after-allegations-of-fraud-and-theft-amounting-to-r1-3-million-linked-to-president/blt11cfba08a2d5fbcb#cs1f6322024e46b192" target="_blank">accusing Jordan of fraud and corruption</a> of stealing at least R1.3 million, misusing and utilising the organisation’s resources for his personal benefit.Now, Safa's chief financial officer, Gronie Hluyo has confirmed that the association found it unfair and is taking the Hawks to court.

WHAT HAPPENED?

“The Hawks raided Safa offices on March 8, and they took certain items. But they returned those items on March 11," said Hluyo, as<a href="https://sundayworld.co.za/sports/soccer/the-hawks-return-safas-seized-laptops-and-hard-drives/" target="_blank"> per Sunday World.</a>"We launched a complaint with the judge within the Hawks. This in terms of the steps we have taken on March 15.“The Hawks have a platform where we can lodge complaints. We complained because, in our view, the raid was unlawful. And the manner in which it was conducted, we consider it as unfair,'' he added.''So, we received a reference for our complaint, and we are waiting for further action from the judge. On April 4, we lodged an application in the High Court to have that warrant set aside."We can’t give more information because the matter is sub-judice. Those are the steps we have taken so far.''

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

It was reported that the Hawks seized laptops, external hard drives and a USB as part of the investigation. However, they have now returned that equipment, according to Hluyo.The 72-year-old Jordaan has been the Safa president since taking the reigns in 2013 from Kirsten Nematandani.

It remains to be seen what will be the judge's outcomes and how will the Hawks approach or respond to the matter.Jordaan continues to be the federation's leader as he <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/news/jordaan-re-elected-as-safa-president/bltaf35c155a3c55815" target="_blank">retained his position in 2022.</a>
