The Premier Soccer League defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns lost their bid to win the MTN8 and the Carling Knockout trophies despite their quality and winning mentality.However, they have since <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/congratulations-mzansi-pep-mamelodi-sundowns-winning-plastic-afl-cup-kaizer-chiefs-orlando-pirates-take-notes/bltb32758f84d0039a7" target="_blank">won the inaugural African Football League [AFL],</a> and are <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/premier-soccer-league/table/yv73ms6v1995b5wny16jcfi3" target="_blank">on course for the seventh successive PSL crown</a>.The team is also in the semi-final of the Caf Champions League - where they are scheduled to play Tunisia's Esperance, as well as the Nedbank Cup quarter-final where they have been paired with the University of Pretoria.Despite the depth and quality within the squad, Rhulani Mokwena has played down chances of winning all the competitions they remain in, comparing the situation with the Kaizer Chiefs of 2001 under Muhsin Ertugral.

WHAT HAPPENED?

"Who has done it before? As much as we want to do it and as much as we think about the possibility of doing it, but for sure, it's a very difficult task," Mokwena told the media."And you have to think about who has done it before; as a youngster, I was probably not even thinking about coaching at that time. I remember Muhsin Ertugral's Kaizer Chiefs with Operation Vat Alles [in 2001]."Even then, they didn't win the league and they had such a good side playing such good football, and I think the Confederation Cup was still called Mandela Cup and they were such a good side," he added."That already tells you how difficult it is trying to win every single trophy. We have to go game-by-game and try to establish ourselves in every competition and put ourselves in the next round of every tournament."

WHAT MOKWENA SAID

Having won the AFL and with the PSL within their grasp thanks to their consistency which has put them clear at the top - with 52 points, 13 more than second-placed Stellenbosh and having three games at hand - Mokwena is at least guaranteed two trophies.The 37-year-old has set his sights on the Caf Champions League meaning he might opt to field a fringe team in the Nedbank Cup this Friday, reducing his chances of winning it.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mokwena will have to manage his players effectively to avoid fatigue and unnecessary injuries to stand a chance of winning the Caf Champions League.However, the Nedbank Cup will give fringe players an opportunity to get minutes in their legs and show their worth ahead of the run in to the season.
