Man City ratings: Every treble-winning player's performance in the 2022-23 season - ranked

Manchester City have completed football this season. Pep Guardiola's side have won every trophy that matters and they have destroyed most of their opponents in the process. Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have all been subjected to brutal beatings by City this season, and not even Europe's most prestigious clubs have been spared the wrath of the boys in blue, who beat Real Madrid 4-0 and Bayern Munich 3-0.

Guardiola has been the architect of this all-conquering season, but he has been blessed by a host of incredible individual performances, taking City to yet another Premier League title, the FA Cup without conceding a goal in open play and the one they craved the most, the Champions League.

GOAL rates the Man City players who won the club the treble...

  • Kalvin Phillips Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    22Kalvin Phillips - 3/10

Signing Phillips after he had missed four months with a muscle tear was always a risk, and his transfer from Leeds, for £42 million, has been a real disappointment. He started only two Premier League games, both of which were after City had wrapped up the title, and played only 38 minutes of Champions League football.

He has suffered two shoulder injuries, but overall Guardiola has not been convinced by him, remarking in December that he was "overweight" after returning from the World Cup. He is unlikely to remain at the club beyond the summer, and his failure to integrate into the team has been one of very few marks against City's otherwise incredible campaign.

  • Sergio Gomez Man City 2022Getty Images

    21Sergio Gomez - 3/10

The Spaniard has just not adapted to his new club and has rarely managed to convince Guardiola he is worthy of a place in his team, even from the bench. His only Premier League starts came after the title had been wrapped up, while he was only given two starts in the FA Cup, even when Guardiola rotated his squad.

He has been out of tune with his team-mates, and in the Carabao Cup defeat at Southampton - City's worst performance of the campaign - he was hooked at half-time.

  • Aymeric Laporte Manchester City 2022-23Getty Images

    20Aymeric Laporte - 4/10

Laporte was consigned to the fringes of the team for most of the campaign after the arrival of Manuel Akanji and the rise of Nathan Ake. When he was given a rare starting berth, City often did badly, losing twice to Brentford, exiting the Carabao Cup to Southampton and drawing 1-1 at Nottingham Forest.

Guardiola was ruthless with the Spain international after the draw at the City Ground and did not start him in another league game for two months. They still won every game in between, which says everything about his status in the squad. He is almost certainly set to leave City in the summer.

  • Joao Cancelo Pep Guardiola Man City 2022-23Getty Images

    19Joao Cancelo - 4/10

The Portuguese made a solid start to the season after starring in the previous campaign. He contributed four assists and two goals in the first three months, but everything started to go downhill after he was sent off in the 26th minute against Fulham.

City battled on to win that match with 10 men, and Guardiola started to wonder if his side could work better as a team without Cancelo. The player reacted very badly to being left out of the team after the World Cup and, according to one report, wore headphones during one of Guardiola's team talks.

He was soon shipped off on loan to Bayern Munich and City barely missed him. Indeed, with Ake and occasionally Akanji as inside full-backs, they have looked much stronger.

  • Cole Palmer Man City 2022Getty

    18Cole Palmer - 5/10

Palmer has had to make do with just a smattering of appearances, mostly as a substitute, although he has impressed when he has played, setting up the only goal of the game against Chelsea.

He might have to go out on loan to get more experience next season, but he has been a decent squad player, doing his bit when called upon.

  • Riyad Mahrez Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    17Riyad Mahrez - 6/10

The Algerian has had one of his worst seasons at City, ending it with his lowest goal tally in the Premier League. He was routinely left out for the most important matches, too.

He stayed professional and showed that on his day and against the right opponent he is still an outstanding footballer, such as when he led City's storming comeback against Tottenham and scored all their goals in the FA Cup semi-final rout of Sheffield United.

  • Stefan Ortegagetty images

    16Stefan Ortega - 6/10

Guardiola decided last summer that Zack Steffen was not a good enough back-up for Ederson and landed on Ortega. The German had been kept busy at previous club Arminia Bielefeld, who were relegated in his final season, and he has had a very different role at City.

He has been reliable whenever he has been called upon and conceded only seven goals in his 14 matches. His best moments came in the FA Cup, in which he let in only one goal in six matches, Bruno Fernandes' controversial penalty in the final.

He also played his part in Ilkay Gundogan's goal at Wembley after only 13 seconds, causing chaos with his long punt upfield.

  • Rico Lewis Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    15Rico Lewis - 6/10

The teenager is the latest player to step up from City's academy into the first team and Guardiola loves him. Indeed, he was the first player to play the hybrid right-back/holding midfield role early in the season, leading Guardiola to re-jig his entire formation.

John Stones eventually picked up the baton from Lewis, understandable given his extra 11 years of experience, but the versatile 18-year-old is sure to be one of City's most important players over the next decade.

  • Ederson Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    14Ederson - 7/10

The Brazilian has been a passenger for a lot of City's games, but his ability on the ball has helped keep the team's moves flowing and his long passing helped them spring lots of quick breaks.

He made one high-profile error in the 4-2 win over Tottenham while playing out from the back, but it did not affect his confidence or determination to play as a sweeper keeper. He has received some criticism for conceding soft goals and he kept only 11 clean sheets, by far the fewest in his six years with the club.

However, he was still the goalkeeper to concede the fewest goals in the Premier League, and he saved his best performance for the most important game of all, producing four huge saves in the Champions League final, including flying to his top corner to beat away a header from Robin Gosens.

  • Kyle Walker Man City 2022-23Getty Images

    13Kyle Walker - 7/10

Walker faced a real test of his mentality when he was left out of the team for a number of games after the World Cup and was openly questioned by Guardiola about his ability to play in City's new system.

But he won his place back in the team at the crucial stage of the season and stepped up in the biggest games, winning a compelling battle with Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr. Even at 33, he seldom loses a race with an opponent and remains one of the best players in the world at racing back and stealing the ball off an attacker.

An untimely back injury meant he could not start the Champions League final, but he still ended the season on a high.

  • Phil Foden Man City Newcastle 2022-23Getty Images

    12Phil Foden - 7/10

Foden made a sizzling start to the season and scored a memorable hat-trick in the Manchester derby.

The youngster experienced a drop off after the World Cup, though, and lost his place in the team to Jack Grealish. When he did play, though, he always looked like he had a point to prove, and was utterly brilliant in the Champions League final when coming on for Kevin De Bruyne.

  • Julian alvarez manchester city chelse fa cup 08012023@ManCityES

    11Julian Alvarez - 7/10

With the obvious exception of Erling Haaland, no one has a better goals-per-minute ratio in the Manchester City squad than Alvarez. In fact, Haaland is the only player to make more than 10 starts in the Premier League who scored in a higher percentage of starts in all competitions than Alvarez.

The forward has been really patient and never complained about his peripheral role in the team, which is particularly impressive given he won the World Cup in December and was a crucial part of Argentina's side.

He ended the campaign with 17 goals in only 21 starts and is sure to play a bigger role in the team next season.

  • Manuel Akanji Manchester City Manchester United FA Cup final 2022-23Getty

    10Manuel Akanji - 7/10

It is remarkable that City only needed to pay £15 million for Akanji. The former Borussia Dortmund defender took no time at all to understand Guardiola's style of play and has looked comfortable on the right, middle or left of the defence.

Despite never playing as a left-back before, he put in brilliant displays in both games against Real Madrid while Nathan Ake was out, and was also flawless against Arsenal. Another triumph for City's recruitment team.

  • Ruben Dias Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    9Ruben Dias - 8/10

Dias has not worn the captain's armband this season but he may as well have. The Portuguese has been one of City's most important leaders, bossing his defence with authority and calmness.

He had brief spells out of the team after dropping in form just before the World Cup and at the start of 2023, but he came back stronger.

Along with Ake, he has toughened up the team's defence and made them one of the hardest teams in Europe to score against.

  • Bernardo Silva Manchester City 2022-23 Getty

    8Bernardo Silva - 8/10

Silva is the rarest of players, an utterly mesmeric midfielder who dazzles opponents but also a tireless worker who is key to ensuring City's attacking machine continues to run smoothly.

The Portuguese has not contributed as many goals or assists as in previous campaigns, although he saved himself for one of the most important matches of the season by shooting down Real Madrid.

But few players are as vital to the team's overall play and City face another battle to keep him at the club. Convincing him to stay will be vital to them maintaining their success.

  • Nathan Ake Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    7Nathan Ake - 8/10

The Dutchman had only been a bit-part player in his previous two seasons for City, but turned into perhaps their most reliable defender this year.

He managed to usurp Cancelo as Guardiola's first choice left-back despite never playing in the position previously and his qualities led the coach to redesign his defensive system. The manager has been effusive in his praise for Ake and he is set to play a crucial part in the team's exciting future.

  • Kevin De Bruyne Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    6Kevin De Bruyne - 8/10

The Belgian had a strange campaign. He has experienced dips in form at various moments of the season and Guardiola has not been afraid to tell him about it.

But he ultimately finished the season with 10 goals and 28 assists. In one period between September and October, he got eight assists in six matches. And he turned it on after the coach urged him to get back to basics and do what he does best.

In City's final 14 matches, he scored five goals and created 11 more. He tore Arsenal apart in the top-of-the-table showdown and rescued his side against Real Madrid with a long-range bullet. His rotten luck in Champions League finals continued as he got injured against Inter, but at least he got a medal to crown another sensational campaign.

  • John Stones Manchester City 2022-23Getty Images

    5John Stones - 9/10

Stones has gone from outcast to idol in the space of a year, enjoying a new lease of life in the hybrid role of right-back and midfielder. He has always had ability bringing the ball out from the back, and now he has been able to put it to even better use.

He has been involved in some of City's best flowing attacking moves while remaining solid when defending, and he has ironed out nearly all the mistakes that he used to make.

Stones has been one of City's most consistent players and when many of his team-mates shrivelled in the Champions League final, he came into his own against Inter.

  • Ilkay Gundogan Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    4Ilkay Gundogan - 9/10

Gundogan has never been prolific, but he has always been an outstanding player and delivered when City have needed him the most. This season has been do different.

He produced world-class finishes against Everton and Manchester United, making City determined to extend his contract. He may still end up leaving the club for personal reasons, but he does so after captaining them to the treble and again displaying his capacity for scoring impossible goals.

  • Rodri of Manchester City(C)Getty Images

    3Rodri - 9/10

The Spaniard has been the unsung hero of City's incredible campaign, so it was fitting that he got the goal that broke the deadlock against Inter in the Champions League final.

He only missed four matches on City's journey to the treble, and given how much Guardiola likes to rotate and rest players, that says a lot about how much the coach values him.

  • Jack Grealish Manchester City 2022-23Getty Images

    2Jack Grealish - 9/10

Grealish put his difficult first season behind him by becoming one of City's most influential players. He moulded his own game to become a real team player and honed his dribbling style to better suit the team's style of play.

He stopped taking on players for fun or attempting audacious shots on goal and instead always waited to pick the right pass. He also committed to doing his defensive work. Two seasons in, £100 million doesn't seem like that much after all.

  • Erling Haaland Manchester City 2022-23Getty

    1Erling Haaland - 10/10

In his first campaign in the Premier League, Haaland made the league's most legendary players look ordinary. He scored a record-breaking 36 goals in the league and equalled the record for the most goals in a Champions League knockout match.

A prolific striker was the one thing City were missing and the Norwegian has also fired them to the Champions League at the first time of asking. If he remains at the club for even four more seasons, he is sure to unseat Sergio Aguero as City's all-time top scorer. And if he really wants to, he could comfortably break Alan Shearer's goalscoring record too.
