Liverpool sales 2025 summer transfer market GFXGOAL

Trent Alexander-Arnold is leaving Liverpool and the futures of Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk are uncertain - but who else should Arne Slot cash in on this summer?

These are strange days at Anfield. Premier League play will resume next week after the pause for the international break with Liverpool 12 points clear at the top of the table in Arne Slot's first season in charge - and yet a lot of fans are furious right now following reliable reports that Trent Alexander-Arnold is finalising a free transfer to Real Madrid.

Plenty of supporters are upset with the player but a significant amount of anger is being directed at the club for allowing Alexander-Arnold to enter the final few months of his contract, meaning a multi-million-pound asset is going to be lost for nothing. The right-back is obviously not an isolated case either, as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will also be out of contract in a matter of months.

Consequently, there's a very real chance that a title-winning team will have to be significantly overhauled this summer, as signings would have been required anyway, with Liverpool's lack of strength in depth having been once again exposed while trying to compete on four fronts. Of course, given the parsimonious/prudent way that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) runs the club, making money from departures will be integral to the arrival of new players.

With that in mind, GOAL has decided to run through every member of the Liverpool squad to have made at least one Premier League appearance this season to see whether they should be kept or allowed to follow Alexander-Arnold out of the exit door at Anfield this summer...

    Alisson Becker

As he proved with his Champions League first-leg heroics against Paris Saint-Germain, Alisson Becker is still the best goalkeeper in the world - and that's no bad thing. However, the Brazilian's enduring excellence does leave Liverpool in a bit of a pickle. Giorgi Mamardashvili will arrive at Anfield from Valencia this summer and reportedly has no intention of serving as an understudy. Going straight into the starting line-up may be wishful thinking on the Georgian's part, given his form this season, but one cannot help but wonder if the Reds intend to cash in on the injury-prone Alisson, who attracted serious attention from Saudi Arabia last summer, even though the 32-year-old is playing as well as ever.

Verdict: Keep - unless a massive offer is received

    Conor Bradley

Bradley is the obvious candidate to fill the massive void Alexander-Arnold is going to leave behind at right-back. The Irishman underlined his world-class potential with a stirring showing against Real Madrid in the group stage of this season's Champions League and he's undeniably a better one-v-one defender than Alexander-Arnold. So, while there are still some minor concerns over Bradley's ability to stay fit for an entire campaign, he'll have an important role to play next season - either as a starter or an excellent understudy to a likely new arrival.

    Verdict: Keep

  • Federico Chiesa LiverpoolGetty Images

    Federico Chiesa

Slot has rarely put a foot wrong since taking on the seemingly impossible task of replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield but his treatment of Chiesa has been utterly bizarre. The Italian obviously arrived at Anfield in poor shape, as he'd been frozen out of Juventus' pre-season plans by then-coach Thiago Motta, and he suffered from several niggles during the first half of the season - which has been pretty much the story of Chiesa's career. However, Slot's reluctance to give him any meaningful game time - most notably in the second leg of the PSG tie - made little sense, and was only made to look all the more ridiculous by his late goal in the Carabao Cup final. Chiesa clearly isn't finished at the highest level but his spell at Liverpool will be brought to a premature conclusion unless he's guaranteed more game time next year.

Verdict: Sell if Slot is not going to play him

  • Luis DiazGetty Images Sport

    Luis Diaz

The Colombian is a curious case. Liverpool wanted more goals from Diaz this season and he's got nine so far, meaning this is already the most prolific campaign of his Anfield career. However, Diaz's end product continues to frustrate, while he also remains maddeningly inconsistent. He's still the best dribbler at the club and has demonstrated a useful ability to play through the middle this year but Cody Gakpo has emerged as a better option on the left wing and the feeling is that if a big offer were to arrive this summer (most likely from long-time admirers Barcelona), then Liverpool would accept it.

Verdict: Sell - but only if the price is right

  • Liverpool FC v LOSC Lille - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD7Getty Images Sport

    Harvey Elliott

It feels like we've reached a critical juncture in Elliott's Liverpool career. He turns 22 next month and while he's shown again this season how useful he can be off the bench (most notably against PSG at the Parc des Princes), it's a major problem for the England hopeful that he's still waiting for his first Premier League start of the season. Elliott definitely has a lot to offer but we still don't know his best position, so it's hard to figure out exactly where he fits into Slot's side. A parting of the ways could actually be the best solution for everyone involved.

Verdict: Sell at the right price

  • wataru-endo(C)Getty Images

    Wataru Endo

The Japan captain has become a bit of a cult hero on the Kop, having effectively become Liverpool's 'closer' in recent months, the Klopp favourite that Slot sends on to see out games. However, as we learned as far back as pre-season, Endo doesn't offer what the manager wants from a defensive midfielder - which is why he's yet to start a single Premier League game this season. So, while the 32-year-old is universally liked, both for his ball-winning and professionalism, his days at Anfield might be numbered.

Verdict: Sell if Slot is never going to start him

  • FBL-ENG-PR-LIVERPOOL-IPSWICHAFP

    Cody Gakpo

One cannot help but wonder if Liverpool would still be in the Champions League had Cody Gakpo not been hobbled by injury. The Dutchman was in flying form around the turn of the year but has struggled to get back to his best since returning to the first-team fold. Nonetheless, Gakpo has already done more than enough to convince Slot - and everyone else - that he should be a regular next season with 16 goals from just 25 starts.

    Verdict: Keep

    Joe Gomez

Liverpool's utility man has been missed. The multi-talented defender, who even occasionally served as a makeshift defensive midfielder under Klopp, has been out of action with a serious hamstring problem since the turn of the year and his absence has been felt - not least by Ibrahima Konate, who has been showing signs of fatigue of late. Players like Gomez are invaluable and the hope is that he will stay at Anfield, though he would be forgiven for exploring all of his options as he's going to turn 28 in May.

Verdict: Keep if he's willing to continue fighting for a starting spot

  • Ryan Gravenberch Liverpool 2025Getty Images

    Ryan Gravenberch

There were undeniable doubts during the Dutchman's first season at Anfield if he were really cut out for the Premier League. However, Gravenberch has now found his feet - and his role. Liverpool were in serious trouble after being snubbed by Martin Zubimendi last summer but Gravenberch has been a revelation at No.6 and no Red has featured in more Premier League games this season than the Netherlands international (29), which helps explains why the 22-year-old has looked more than a little tired in recent weeks.

    Verdict: Keep

  • FBL-LCUP-ENG-BRIGHTON-LIVERPOOLAFP

    Vitezslav Jaros

Jaros has made just one Premier League appearance this season and even that only lasted 11 minutes, with the Czech coming on for the injured Alisson during the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace in October. His only other outing, against Brighton in the Carabao Cup, was also a bit of a mixed bag, as he made one spectacular save but also looked a little dodgy at times. However, given the uncertainty surrounding the goalkeepers at Anfield right now, it would be a big surprise if the 23-year-old is not asked to continue providing cover for the 2024-25 campaign.

    Verdict: Keep

  • FBL-ENG-PR-MAN CITY-LIVERPOOLAFP

    Curtis Jones

With Alexander-Arnold on his way out, Jones is likely to be the only Liverpudlian playing regularly for the Reds next season. Whether he can nail down a regular starting sport is unclear. Shaking off the minor muscular problems that have held him back in recent years would certainly help. Regardless, Jones has the requisite energy, talent and versatility to ensure he remains a key member of Slot's squad going forward.

    Verdict: Keep

  • FBL-ENG-PR-LIVERPOOL-FULHAMAFP

    Diogo Jota

The Portuguese forward's future at Anfield wouldn't even be a point of discussion if he could stay fit. Unfortunately, he can't. Jota has been once again blighted by injuries this season and, worryingly, has looked a shadow of his former self since returning from his latest setback. Jota was pretty much made for Klopp's Liverpool but he's unlikely to be a key member of Slot's, given his body continues to betray him.

    Verdict: Sell

  • Ibrahima KonateGetty Images Sport

    Ibrahima Konate

Konate clearly has the makings of a world-class centre-back. He's good on the ball, strong in the air, has a decent turn of pace and is incredibly powerful. However, he's also an accident waiting to happen. It's rare that a couple of games go by without Konate doing something stupid. If PSG's rumoured interest in the 25-year-old is true, Liverpool should get what they can for Konate.

Verdict: Sell if a good offer arrives

  • Liverpool FC v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Round of 16 Second LegGetty Images Sport

    Alexis Mac Allister

The former Brighton ace was arguably Liverpool's best player during his first season at Anfield and he's been excellent once again this term. The World Cup-winning Argentine boasts a mix of technique and tenacity that makes him a vital component of the midfield - and the team in general - while his versatility only adds to his value. Given he's still only 26, Mac Allister is likely to remain a starter for years to come.

    Verdict: Keep

  • Darwin Nunez Liverpool 2025Getty Images

    Darwin Nunez

Unfortunately, time's up for Darwin Nunez. This was the season that the Uruguayan was meant to kick on and finally prove himself capable of leading the line for Liverpool - but he's failed dismally in that regard. Nunez has contributed just five goals to the Premier League title tilt and it's become painfully clear in recent weeks that Slot no longer has any faith in the club's expensively-acquired No.9. The hope now is that a Saudi Pro League side will return with a big offer this summer...

Verdict: Sell to raise funds for a proper striker

  • Liverpool FC v Fulham FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    Jarell Quansah

Quansah's emergence as a viable option at centre-half during the first half of the 2023-24 campaign was a most welcome development for Klopp, who was short on numbers at the back even before injuries became an issue. For a fair few months, the academy product looked the real deal. However, while the versatile Quansah was included in Thomas Tuchel's first England squad, he hasn't actually developed as expected this season and given there are rumours that Newcastle are ready to return with another bid for the 22-year-old after failing to sign him last summer, there's a real chance that Liverpool could let him go.

    Verdict: Sell for good money

  • Andy Robertson Liverpool 2025Getty Images

    Andy Robertson

The fiery Scot continues to play with the same level of aggression as always but, unfortunately, he's no longer the force of nature he once was on Liverpool's left flank. Robertson hasn't contributed a single Premier League goal or assist this season, while he's also looked increasingly vulnerable from a defensive perspective and even got himself stupidly sent off in a game against Fulham in December. Consequently, Liverpool are expected to sign a new left-back this summer.

Verdict: Keep - to help guide his successor

  • Mohamed Salah Liverpool 2025Getty Images

    Mohamed Salah

Liverpool simply cannot afford to lose Salah this summer. The Egyptian is utterly irreplaceable. He's been directly involved in more goals this season (54) than any other player across Europe's 'Big five' leagues. He may be about to turn 33 but Salah is playing at the peak of his powers. Liverpool need to hold onto their talisman at all costs.

    Verdict: Keep

    Dominik Szoboszlai

Jamie Carragher is among those demanding more of an end product from Szoboszlai, who has seven goals and five assists in 40 appearances in all competitions this season, and it's something that Slot has touched on too. However, the Hungarian's relentless running and intensive pressing have played key roles in Liverpool's title charge, and while his status as a certain starter could come under threat if a No.10 is signed this summer, his spot in the squad is secure.

    Kostas Tsimikas

The Greece international has put Robertson under more pressure than at any previous point during their time together at Liverpool but it's still not been enough to usurp the Scot. So, with the Reds' recruitment team looking at other possible replacements, this feels like the right time for Tsimikas, who has served the club well, to bid farewell to the Kop. At 28, he needs and deserves regular first-team football.

    Verdict: Sell

  • FBL-ENG-LCUP-LIVERPOOL-NEWCASTLEAFP

    Virgil van Dijk

Another player that Liverpool just cannot do without. Van Dijk is the glue that holds the entire defence together, the intimidating but elegant centre-back that makes going up against the game's most fearsome forwards look so easy. Given the doubts over nearly every single player around him in an increasingly brittle back-line, it's perfectly fair to say that Liverpool would be lost without their leader. The captain needs to be given a new contract now!

  • FBL-EUR-C1-LIVERPOOL-BAYER LEVERKUSENAFP

    Caoimhin Kelleher

The Irishman was understandably fuming after learning Liverpool had effectively lined up Mamardashvili to take over in nets from Alisson. Kelleher felt he'd done more than enough to convince his employers that he could be the club's new No.1 - particularly with his exploits in the Carabao Cup in recent years. Liverpool blocked him from leaving last summer but they're unlikely to stand his way this time around, especially as they could get decent money for a goalkeeper that has attracted attention from a lot of mid-level Premier League clubs.

    Verdict: Sell
