Kaizer Chiefs legend McCarthy insists 'Mamelodi Sundowns should give SuperSport United credit for developing Ronwen Williams'

Williams joined Sundowns before the start of the 2022/23 season from SuperSport United.He joined Matsatsantsa as a development player in 2004 before graduating into the first team and making his professional debut in 2012. McCarthy believes SuperSport be credited for building Williams into the player he has become today.

WHAT HAPPENED?

"Based on what I saw from the match against Young Africans, Sundowns should be happy that they have Ronwen Williams as their goalkeeper," McCarthy told <a href="https://www.snl24.com/soccerladuma/local/premiership/mamelodi-sundowns/mamelodi-sundowns-deserve-all-the-success-fabian-mccarthy-20240413" target="_blank">Soccer Laduma.</a>"We can all see that Ronwen is on top of his game. I think we must also give credit to SuperSport United for developing and entrusting him with a big responsibility while he was still a youngster."SuperSport United are the ones who developed Ronwen and made him their number one choice and played him on a regular basis even though he was still young," he said."The goalkeeper coaches that worked with him, played a big role in helping him become the goalkeeper that he is today. Ronwen is very matured now; he delivers in every game that he plays."

WHAT MCCARTHY SAID

Williams has been with Bafana Bafana for over a decade now and seems to still have a few more years in the national team. His experience has been crucial in the national team and it showed at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where he inspired Hugo Broos' men to a bronze medal. He has also managed to relegate veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango to being second-choice stopper at Sundowns.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

After his penalty heroics in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals against University of Pretoria on Friday, there are a lot of expectations on Williams to help the Brazilians to the Caf Champions League and PSL titles. Sundowns now prepare to face Moroka Swallows in a PSL match on Monday.
