Bafana Bafana vs Morocco: Percy Tau, Monnapule Saleng and SA stars who can hurt the Atlas Lions

A Bafana Bafana side dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns players will face Morocco in their final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The Atlas Lions arrived in Johannesburg with a squad dominated by players who were at the 2022 Fifa Word Cup and on paper, they look stronger than Hugo Broos' men.

GOAL takes a look at Bafana players who can stun the North Africans, a team that has previously dominated South Africa.

    Themba Zwane

One of the most experienced players in this squad, Zwane is a vital cog in Bafana's midfield.

He is just coming from a season in which he was key for Mamelodi Sundowns in the Caf Champions League although they missed out on the title.

With Morocco bringing in their 2022 Fifa World Cup stars, Zwane can be relied upon to help Bafana stand their ground against their much-fancied opponents.

After being snubbed by Broos for some period of time, Zwane returned to the national fold and immediately showed his class with a brace in an international friendly match against Sierra Leone.

    Monnapule Saleng

Saleng is yet to make an impact in the Bafana team but can be trusted to announce his arrival on the international stage.

He goes into Saturday's match high in confidence after a dream season with Orlando Pirates in which he scored 15 goals and made 11 assists in all competitions.

If selected to play and replicates his club form, Saleng has the ability to cause damage to the Moroccans.

  • Teboho Mokoena of South Africa.Backpagepix.

    Teboho Mokoena

At 26, the newly-crowned PSL Footballer of the Season already boasts of vast international experience dating back to 2018.

Mokoena has always risen to the occasion whenever facing a big team.

He also has a goal or two in his legs with his cunning long-range shots and Moroccan goalkeepers might have to ask Al Ahly and Egypt stopper Mohamed El Shenawy who was recently a victim of Mokoena's artistry.

    Percy Tau

Tau arrived in the Bafana camp on the backdrop of winning his second Caf Champions League title last weekend.

It was a campaign he was instrumental in with five goals and as many assists.

Boasting of previous Uefa Champions League experience as well as scintillating displays in the Belgian top-flight league, this is a player who can match most of the Atlas Lions' stars and can stun the Moroccans.

  • Kylian Mbappe, France & Siyanda Xulu, Bafana Bafana, March 2022Backpagepix

    Siyanda Xulu

The Bafana vice-captain has been with the national team for over a decade.

Looking at his experience, Xulu can frustrate Morocco attackers with his usual solid displays at the back.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs defender has always shown some leadership and that has always been crucial for Bafana although they sometimes struggle.
