Former Leeds United star rips into 'not-good-enough' Ghana striker Ekuban

Former Leeds United ace Noel Whelan has slammed want-away striker Caleb Ekuban, who is currently out on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor.

After a frustrating time in England last season, Ghana international Ekuban has seemingly rediscovered his rhythm this term, prompting reports about a possible return to Elland Road next season.

The 25-year-old and his agent have, however, revealed that a move back to England is unlikely, a stance that has seemingly irked the Leeds faithful.

“He’s not good enough to play for Leeds, we saw that last season," Whelan claimed, as reported by Vital Leeds.

“He is surplus to requirements as we need a better quality of player.

“We don’t need him and I’m sure we will be pleased to get him off the wage bill.”

Italian-born Ekuban joined Leeds from Serie A side Chievo Verona on a four-year deal in 2017.

An underwhelming first season, where he scored once in 20 league appearances, saw him shipped off on loan to Trabzonspor in a deal that could be made permanent.

With eight goals in all competitions so far in Turkey, Black Sea Storm are expected to exercise their buy option in the off-season.

The 25-year-old, having scored two goals in two internationals for Ghana, could be selected in James Kwesi Appiah's squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group F alongside defending champions Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
