GOAL's Culture & Clobber Axis: New boots for Lionel Messi, Neymar, Arne Slot's head-loss and more

Welcome to the Culture & Clobber Axis, where GOAL runs the rule over all the latest from the intersection of football and culture - from the sublime to the ridiculous, to what hits and what misses completely.

We're all about new boots this week, with new clobber for the likes of Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Neymar, while a bad week for Liverpool has thrown up no shortage of delicious narrative.

But where do the week's biggest talking points from the football zeitgeist place in our comprehensive axis? Let's get into it...

    New signature boots for Leo

Lionel Messi has become synonymous with adidas' iconic F50 speed boot, and he has been blessed with a new signature pair despite the fact he's closing in on his 40s - a reflection of his enduring influence on that game, which will last long beyond his retirement.

What's more, Leo has chosen 10 young ballers from the men's and women's game to wear the silver, blue and electric yellow Messi F50 Player Pack 1, including Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, the USWNT's Jaedyn Shaw and future Man City starlet Cavan Sullivan.

    AC Milan x Off-White kits

Streetwear label Off-White have revealed their first-ever football kit to be worn on-pitch in collaboration with Italian powerhouse AC Milan and their manufacturer PUMA.

The template is spot on, featuring an all-over Off-White logo pattern, collar and cuffs. A striking red and black colourways that fades into dark green might not be for everyone, but the 'Pan-African' palette has been used to mark Black History Month.

    Women's stars dominate new ads

Super Bowl week brought with it a load of big-budget ads, with women's football taking centre stage. Nike's 'So Win' campaign went live during the NFL's showcase, featuring Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas alongside a number of the American sportswear giant's other female athletes.

adidas' latest work emerged during the week, as Putellas' club-mate Aitana Bonmati and USWNT icon Trinity Rodman starring in a series of films under the title 'You Got This' as a response to 'negative pressure'. All of this just goes to show the exponential growth of the women's game across the globe.

    Man City's misguided banner

Oh dear, Man City. The week after being on the receiving end of a barrage of sh*thousery from Arsenal fans, the Cityzens fans really shot themselves in the foot as they decided to mock Real Madrid, Vinicius Junior and Florentino Perez ahead of the two sides' Champions League clash.

Before kick-off, a banner was unfurled with the Oasis lyrics 'Stop crying your heart out' and an image of Rodri kissing the Ballon d'Or trophy, which he famously pipped Vini Jr to last year amid Los Blancos' incendiary decision to boycott the ceremony. However, Real Madrid would go on to snatch a last-minute winner, with Vinicius named man of the match. Ouch.

    Everton's Goodison derby goodbye

Scenes, absolute sceeenes. Wednesday night marked the last-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park before Everton move to their new stadium in the summer, and boy did it deliver.

It looked like Mohamed Salah had settled a fiery affair that had been full of needle and big tackles, only for centre-back James Tarkowski to pop up and thunder home a leveller with the last kick of the game. Cue limbs like never before, a mini pitch invasion, a mass brawl and FOUR post-match red cards as the lid was blown off the famous old ground. A fitting derby send-off.

  • Kane's bold new boots

Harry Kane has a new pair of boots, with footwear specialists Skechers dropping the SKX Electrum for the England captain and other athletes who have joined their growing roster of stars. Skechers are the kings of comfort and performance, but this colourway isn't for the fainthearted.

    A vintage FA Cup upset

This is it. This is what the FA Cup is all about. The financial might of Premier League clubs compared to their lower-league rivals means there has been a dearth of true giant-killings in recent years, but Plymouth scratched that itch at the weekend.

Lining up against a rotated Liverpool side that still featured a frontline of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa, the Championship's bottom club produced an upset for the ages against the best team in Europe as they triumphed 1-0 courtesy of an incredibly cool Ryan Hardie penalty. Up the Pilgrims.

  • Arne Slot loses it

Arne Slot has been the picture of cool since arriving on English shores to take over Liverpool in the summer, calmly guiding the Reds to the top of the Premier League and Champions League league phas. But on Wedneday, the Dutchman finally lost it.

He went absolutely berserk on the touchline when Tarkowski walloped in the leveller with the last kick of the game in the derby, throwing a tantrum a toddler would be proud of. Then the red mist fully descended after full-time, as his comical, aggressively sarcastic shake of referee Michael Oliver's hand earned him an instant dismissal.

  • Nike re-release classic PL balls

Nike have given us a shot of pure nostalgia with the re-release of three iconic balls in the Premier League Heritage pack. They include the Geo Merlin from 2000-01, the Seitiro from 2011-12 and the Ordem 3 from 2015-16.

This is Nike going out in style as they prepare to be replaced as the Prem's ball supplier after 24 years, with PUMA taking their place from 2025-26. A throwback we didn't know we needed.

    PUMA Creativity pack

It's been a big few weeks for Neymar, who is back at his boyhood club Santos after a dramatic turn of events. Now, PUMA have honoured their biggest-name athlete with a new boot pack.

Celebrating the Brazilian's ability and style, the German sportswear giant has dropped the Creativity pack, featuring the FUTURE8 boot in a striking 'orange poppy' colourway. They certainly match Neymar's flair.

  • Football Manager 25 scrappedSports Interactive

    FM 25 is cancelled

There's been some very bad news for Football Manager heads, with the latest instalment of the game - which was supposed to feature a completely refurbished graphics engine - officially cancelled. After the release had already been pushed back, the shock announcement comes alongside the emergence of SEGA's recent financial results.

"We have made the difficult decision to cancel Football Manager 25 and shift our focus to the next release," a statement from developer Sports Interactive read. "Due to a variety of challenges that we've been open about to date, and many more unforeseen, we currently haven't achieved what we set out to do in enough areas of the game."
