Erik ten Hag launches robust Casemiro defence and explains why Man Utd star's form has dipped dramatically this season

Following a lacklustre display in the recent 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, Casemiro faced heavy scrutiny, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp likening his performance to that of a participant in Soccer Aid. Following a series of injuries this season, which forced him to miss three months of action, there has been a notable decline in form which has resulted in backlash from fans.

Despite the setbacks, Ten Hag remains steadfast in his belief in Casemiro's capabilities and told reporters: "We needed a six when I arrived here and last season he was fantastic. I don’t think he had ever scored so many goals but as a holding midfielder, he was so important to the team. This season he has struggled with a bad injury that he never had in his career but he is such a winner - all his career, he has always won. Everywhere he was, there was success. And I trust he will also bring us success. I know he needs games and he will be better. I am very confident about him, he is a fighter, that is why he has won big trophies. He is a personality and is a very important player.”

Casemiro has fond memories of Wembley as he played a decisive role by scoring the opening goal against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final in February 2023, which earned him the Man of the Match accolade and United the trophy. Taking that example, Ten Hag did not forget to remind the fans about Casemiro's impact in pivotal games and stressed that he continues to be an "important factor" at United. “In that game - and not just that game but also in qualifying for the Champions League - he was such an important factor,” said Ten Hag. “He made a difference.”

Casemiro will get a chance to redeem himself when United play Coventry on Sunday. It is a crucial clash for the Red Devils as it presents an opportunity to advance to the final and get their hands on silverware in what has otherwise been an extremely underwhelming campaign.
