KFC Moments of the Day: Fernando Muslera equals old tournament record, Cristiano Ronaldo nets historic goal

A record that stood for 44 years was equaled by Fernando Muslera when Uruguay faced Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, while Cristiano Ronado scored a historic goal against Morocco.

Fernando Muslera equalled an Uruguayan record in the global football extravaganza when he started against Asian side Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

The experienced goalkeeper played his 99th match as The Sky Blue's secured an unexpectedly narrow 1-0 win over the Falcons of Saudi Arabia.

In doing so, Muslera also tied Ladislao Mazurkiewicz as the player to have made the most appearances for Uruguay at the global football showcase. 

The legendary Uruguayan goalkeeper featured for the national team 13 times - playing for his country in the 1966, 1970 and 1974 tournaments. 

Mazurkiewicz, who is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers of all-time, passed away in 2013 at the age of 67. 

Since making his debut for Uruguay in October 2009, Muslera, who is on the books of Turkish champions Galatasaray, has established himself as Uruguay's finest.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper, who was part of the Uruguay squads at the 2010 and 2014 competitions, is expected to make his 100th appearance against Russia on Monnday.

Maxi Pereira holds the record for the most appearances for Uruguay - having turned out for the Sky Blue an astonishing 125 times.

Cristiano Ronaldo's strike in the 1-0 win over Morocco on Wednesday was his 85th international goal, breaking a record which had stood for 62 years.

Prior to CR7's header, Hungarian forward Ferenc Puskas had held the record for the most goals for a European nation with 84 goals between 1945 and 1956.

Ronaldo moved level with Puskas with his hat-trick in Portugal's first game against Spain last weekend.

The 33-year-old forward is now Europe's top international goalscorer and second on the global list behind only Iranian football legend Ali Daei. 

Ronaldo will have to keep hitting the net if he hopes to match or break Daei's incredible record of 109 goals for Iran during his 13-year international career between 1993 and 2006. 

Ronaldo will be hoping to close in on Daei when Portugal take on his nation Iran on Monday.

A win for Portugal will see them advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.
