In a back-and-forth match that saw Barca fall behind a goal early on, Messi scored the equalizer and the game-winner to keep his club in the Liga title race.
After Casemiro gave Los Blancos the lead midway through the first half, Messi worked his way past defenders to slip a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the 33rd minute. That strike made Messi the all-time leading scorer in El Clasico, giving him 15 goals in meetings between Barca and Madrid.
But the Argentine wasn't done there.
Messi netted his 500th career goal for Barca in stoppage time, receiving a Jordi Alba cross at the top of the box and firing home at the death.
In the first half it seemed as though Messi may have been in for a rough day after he took an elbow from Marcelo resulting in a bloody mouth, but it turned out to be one of the most clutch performances of his storied career.
