Neres helped Sao Paulo's youth side win the 2016 Under-20 Copa Libertadores before being promoted to their senior squad, scoring three goals in his first eight appearances.

The forward's arrival at Ajax was delayed due to his participation in the South American Youth Football Championship, where Brazil finished in fifth place after a scoreless draw with Colombia meant they missed out on qualification for the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
