Former Middlesbrough striker Mido has ridiculed suggestions that Gareth Southgate could succeed Roy Hodgson as England manager.

Mido worked under Southgate for three years at the Riverside prior to the former England defender’s sacking in 2009, with the club languishing in the Championship.

And ex-Zamalek boss Mido has since reacted with disbelief to reports suggesting that Southgate could succeed Roy Hodgson, who resigned as manager following Monday’s chastening 2-1 defeat against Iceland in the last-16 of Euro 2016.

“I can’t believe that in England they are talking about Gareth Southgate to become the new manager! I hope he learned since the Boro days,” he wrote on Twitter.

Middlesbrough were relegated under Southgate’s management in the 2008-09, and embarked on a dismal run of just one win in 18 games.

However, Southgate has endured moderate success with the England Under-21 team, leading them to the European Under-21 Championships in 2015, though they finished bottom of their group in the tournament.
