I didn't say that people don't know football, says Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has lashed out at critics who questioned midfielder Dean Furman's contribution on Saturday against Libya.

South Africa drew their second 2019 Caf African Cup of Nations qualifier against the North Africans with Furman walking away with the man of the match award for a solid display in the middle of the park.

“I think one thing that comes to mind is the fact that I thought Dean was outstanding this evening," Baxter said to the media.

"I thought Keagan Dolly was excellent as well. I know that when we select the team there's always someone that pops his hand up and says, 'what about Dean Furman and why is he playing? What about Keagan Dolly, why is he playing?,” quizzed the mentor.

"When you make that sort of comment I mean people must feel pretty silly when he puts in the performance he did tonight. Dean is an asset to South Africa and I think anybody that doesn't see that doesn't know football," he continued.

Moreover, the former SuperSport United coach also took time to respond to questions regarding the decision to rope in his son, Lee, as goalkeeper coach in the absence of Andre Arendse.

The former Bafana keeper was not available to serve on the bench for the encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium due to family commitments, which forced Baxter to include his son in the technical team, a decision which raised many eyebrows.

"I didn't say that people don't know football. What I said, if you listened to me, was I don't understand any criticism of me bringing in Lee in the camp. He's the most qualified goalkeeper coach in this country," he concluded.

Despite the draw against the Mediterranean Knights, Bafana remain second in Group E with four points and will welcome Seychelles in their next match in October.

The Islanders are yet to taste a victory in the qualifying campaign and are fresh from two defeats to Libya and Nigeria.
