Gyan reveals reasons for failed Manchester City move

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has lifted the lid on his failed move to Premier League giants Manchester City more than a decade ago.

 

At age 22, Gyan's quick feet and incredible eye for goal in French Ligue 1 with Stade Rennes attracted interest from Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was then in charge of City.

 

However, the deal fell through at the eleventh hour due to injury concerns.

 

"I had an offer from Manchester City before the 2008 Afcon but I lost the opportunity to play for them because I underwent a surgery which kept me out for six months," Gyan told Adom TV.

 

"I was nursing the injury before the Afcon but instead of curing it, I joined Ghana squad because I wanted to represent the country since it was my first time to have the opportunity to play at that tournament. Remember Ghana was hosting it so I was eager to help.

 

"I was so keen to play and somehow worsened the damage at the end so the deal never materialised. But in the end, I arrived in the Premier League after some years at Sunderland and did my best for them. While in England, I had offers from several top clubs including Real Madrid but I opted to join Al Ain and has never regretted," he added.

 

Gyan, who is currently on the books of Turkish side Kayserispor, later reunited with Eriksson at Chinese Super League giants Shanghai SIPG between 2015 and 2016.
