U.S. youth international Desevio Payne scores first pro goal in Groningen victory

U.S. youth international Desevio Payne opened his Eredivisie account Saturday, firing in a low shot for Groningen's second goal in a 4-1 romp over Heracles.

Payne's goal came in the 34th minute, putting his side up 2-0 early in the big win with a long-range shot after taking one touch to setting the pass he received from Juninho Bacuna.

The 21-year-old went the full 90 in the match, his first appearance of the season. Payne made his Eredivisie debut in the 2014-15 campaign and saw time in nine contests in the 2015-16 season but was sidelined by a heel injury in the opening portion of this campaign.

In addition to contesting the 2015 U-20 World Cup with the U.S., Payne — also eligible for the Netherlands and Trinidad and Tobago — was a part of the Americans' failed effort to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, playing in the second leg of the playoff against Colombia.
