Club America confirms Jeremy Menez signing

Club America has secured the forward it has been looking for in the winter market, announcing the signing of French striker Jeremy Menez.

Las Aguilas finished third in the Liga MX Apertura regular season but sputtered in the Liguilla. After failing to score a goal in four postseason matches, manager Miguel Herrera mad it clear this offseason that his top priority was bringing in attacking reinforcements. The club was linked with forwards in both Europe and South America before finalizing a move for Menez on Friday.

America found an attacking rhythm during the last campaign, but the goals dried up toward the end of the season. Oribe Peralta's six goals led the team, with one of those coming from the penalty spot. But after Peralta, a handful of players tied with three goals were second on the team as forward Silvio Romero and wingers Darwin Quintero and Cecilio Dominguez struggled to find the back of the net in the fall. In addition to Menez, America also has been linked with Luuk de Jong of PSV and Andres Ibarguen of Racing Club.

Menez comes to Mexico City from Antalyaspor. The Turkish club is selling off many components after an ownership change. The 30-year-old joined the club in the summer and has played only 213 minutes. Menez is scoreless in those minutes and has just one 10-plus goals season in his career. That came with AC Milan in 2014-15 when the Frenchman notched 16 Serie A goals in 33 games.

Herrera and Las Aguilas clearly hope he can rediscover that scoring touch, and the player himself says he's excited to play in Liga MX.

"Happy and proud to be part of the biggest club in Mexico," Menez tweeted. "I promise all the Azulcremas fans I'll give everything for this shirt. I'll see you very soon."

America begins its Clausura when it travels north to face Queretaro on Saturday.
