  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 29-time capped USMNT goalkeeper, who was surprisingly left off the 2022 Qatar World Cup roster, is nearing a return stateside with the Rapids. After departing the Columbus Crew in 2019 for the English powerhouse side in a deal worth $7m (£5.6m), Steffen never broke into Pep Guardiola's team in a consistent role and was instead loaned out several times. Now, after undergoing knee surgery in the summer, the 28-year-old is headed to the Rapids.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 28-year-old has joined new Rapids manager Chris Armas in the Western Conference after a 2023 campaign that saw them end bottom of the division. Steffen will not occupy a Designated Player slot and will instead be a TAM signing.

Steffen's loans away from City have been at Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga and Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship.

    WHAT NEXT FOR STEFFEN

Steffen will finally earn first-team minutes, and potentially climb back into the USMNT picture with his stateside move. For City, it will be another player off their books, allowing them some potential funds in the winter transfer market. After 2023, the Rapids will need all the roster help possible, and Steffen only improves them.
