Valencia's most expensive player sales - How La Liga side made over €900 million in outgoing transfers

Valencia have been one of the biggest clubs in Spain for over a century, winning six Spanish league titles, eight Copa del Rey titles, one Spanish Super Cup, one Uefa Cup, one Uefa Cup Winners' Cup and two Uefa Super Cups amid many other honours.

Los Che's academy produced the likes of Raul Albiol, Gaizka Mendieta, David Silva, Isco, Jordi Alba, and Ferran Torres among many more.

This meant that they had to part ways with many of these players at some point or another, but they ensured the club earned a lot from their sales!

After scoring 108 goals in 166 appearances for Valencia, Barcelona came calling, signing Villa for €40m in May 2010.

Two months later, Villa lifted the World Cup with Spain, before going on to win La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup and the Champions League in his debut 2010/11 domestic season with the Blaugrana.

The centre-back beat Bacary Sagna's record unbeaten start of 17 games at the club, when he played his 18th consecutive game without defeat for Arsenal in their 3-3 draw against Bournemouth in his first season at the club.

After four years in which he made 102 appearances, Arsenal and Mustafi mutually agreed to terminate his contract in February 2021.

  • GAIZKA MENDIETA Valencia 2000getty Images

    1Gaizka Mendieta | €48 million | Lazio | 2001

Gaizka Mendieta joined Valencia in 1992 for €180,000 at the age of just 17.

One of his best series performances for Valencia came in the Copa del Rey in the 1998-99 season, when he scored in wins over Levante, Barcelona (both legs) and Real Madrid. In the final he scored a memorable goal, controlling a cross on his chest before flicking the ball over his own head, thus beating two defenders before volleying it in the back of the net.

In the 1999-2000 season, Mendieta was at the peak of his powers as he helped Valencia reach the Champions League final, where lost 3-0 to Real Madrid. Los Che repeated the same feat in the 2000-2001 season, this time losing to Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw, after Mendieta had scored from the spot to give his side a 1-0 lead early on.

Mendieta was one of the most sought-after players following that season and in the 2001 summer transfer window, Lazio signed him for €48 million, making him the sixth most expensive player in history at that time.

He is to date still Valencia's most expensive sale!
