  • Mount was signed in a £60 million deal
  • Has struggled to impress at Old Trafford
  • Criticised for not showing mental toughness
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The English midfielder, who made a high-profile move from Chelsea to United in the summer of 2023, finds himself under intense scrutiny as his debut season at Old Trafford has been marred by injuries and criticism of his mental fortitude.

Mount's troubles came to a head during United's recent 4-3 defeat against his former club, Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge as the 24-year-old was subjected to boos from the home crowd after being brought on as a second-half substitute. Moreover, a yellow jersey printed with Judas and No. 19 was flashed by a Chelsea fan for his decision to join a direct league rival.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mount has now received flak from former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit, who has lambasted the player for his lack of belief. Petit went on to urge Mount to "look into the mirror" so that he can regain his composure ahead of the business end of the season and cap off the campaign on a high.

  • WHAT PETIT SAID

Speaking to Genting Casino, Petit said: "It’s embarrassing from Chelsea fans that they booed Mount. However, you can’t just want to leave the club when things aren’t going well on the pitch, you have to be stronger than that mentally. Right now, he’s playing for Man United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and you know what you signed up to when you signed for them.

"He’s coming back from a long-term injury, a professional footballer, and an athlete at the highest level must improve mentally. Before he was injured, he was playing like he walking on eggshells - very fragile mentally - and he’s kind of like Marcus Rashford at United. Mount arrived from Chelsea and he doesn’t look strong mentally. I used to be like that and it used to affect my performance on the pitch, but come on! You wake up in the morning, drive a Lamborghini, you need to look in the mirror! He was booed by Chelsea fans, but at the end of the day, he wanted to stay at the club."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Mount has made just 11 league appearances so far this campaign and even after returning from injury, he has been used mostly as a late substitute by Erik ten Hag. The former Chelsea star is, however, contracted to remain at Old Trafford until 2028 and will likely be given time to justify his £60 million fee.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MOUNT?

Mount was given just six minutes in United's last match against Liverpool. As the season draws to a close, the midfielder will be hoping for more involvement by impressing Ten Hag in training sessions. He will hope to play a more prominent role against Bournemouth on Saturday as United seek to keep their faint hopes of Champions League qualification alive.
