'80 points' - Man City told what they can expect if found guilty of 115 financial charges as Premier League executive provides update

Eight-time Premier League champions Manchester City have been charged with possibly breaking the League's financial rules on multiple instances with some of the irregularities stretching back over 15 years. The 115 financial charges against City will be investigated by an independent disciplinary tribunal starting next month, and a decision is anticipated early in 2025.

According to reports, City may be punished with fines, relegation, or even a reduction in points should they be found guilty. However, an unnamed Premier League executive has now told The Athletic exactly what penalties Pep Guardiola's side could face. The executive reportedly told them that City could very well receive a "substantial points deduction" in the region of "70-80 points" and that would see the eight-time Premier League champions all but certainly relegated to the Championship.

Man City have already claimed innocence concerning the charges and will likely challenge any sort of potential point deduction in the future with the Court of Sports Arbitration (CAS) similar to what they had done in 2021 when they were handed a two-year ban from European competitions by UEFA. CAS eventually scrapped the ban and instead handed the Cityzens fines for non-compliance.

With the investigations set to begin in September, City will soon have to begin working with the independent disciplinary tribunal off the field. Meanwhile, Guardiola and Co will focus on the on-field matters as they begin their hunt for their fifth-straight Premier League title.
