Liverpool linked with shock move for Mason Greenwood as Marseille's asking price is revealed

After spending the 2023-24 season on loan at Getafe, Greenwood was permanently sold to Marseille in a £26.6 million deal last summer. The 22-year-old has hit the ground running in France, delivering an impressive 14 goals and three assists in 22 appearances so far this season. His performances have played a key role in helping Marseille climb to second place in Ligue 1, making him one of the most talked-about young forwards in European football.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, The Reds have been mentioned as one of four clubs interested in securing his signature. The Merseyside club is said to be competing with Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Barcelona. Aware of Greenwood’s growing value, Marseille have placed a €75 million (£62 million) price tag on the forward, making it a difficult deal for Barcelona due to their financial struggles. However, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Juventus are all in a position to meet the asking price if they choose to make a formal offer.

While Manchester United parted ways with Greenwood in 2024, they negotiated a 50 percent sell-on clause in the deal, meaning they would be entitled to a substantial sum if Marseille were to sell him. Reports also suggest that United have the option to increase their stake in any future transfer.

Given Greenwood's importance to the team, Marseille will fight to retain him unless an irresistible offer is made. However, if Liverpool or Bayern Munich come calling, the English forward might find it tempting to jump ship. In the short term, he will return to action against Nantes on Sunday in Marseille's next Ligue 1 fixture.
