  • Moved to Italy over the summer
  • Often used in a right wing-back berth
  • Feels more at home on the opposite flank
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The USMNT star completed a move to Italy over the summer when joining fellow countryman Weston McKennie in Turin. He has settled quickly at Juve, but has seen plenty of bench duty after competing with McKennie for a right wing-back berth in Massimiliano Allegri’s plans.

    WHAT THEY SAID

Weah considers himself to be more of a forward – as he plays as an attacker for his country – and has told Gazzetta dello Sport of putting his versatility to good use in Italy: “I’m learning a new role and this is very important for me. For Juve, I play in a deeper position compared to the national team, but I’m adapting well. With the USMNT, I play in attacking midfield trio behind the lone striker, with quality players like Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna, a position that I really like. If I had the choice, I would prefer to play on the left with the possibility of cutting to the centre and going for the goal. But I understand well what the team needs from me.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While having to operate in an unfamiliar position, Weah is enjoying his spell in Italian football having already spent time in France and Scotland at Paris Saint-Germain, Lille and Celtic. He added: “I’m very happy at Juventus, it’s fantastic to play alongside players of the highest level at a top club. I’m learning a lot every day in training. I feel really lucky to play at such a renowned club. I bonded a bit with everyone, but in particular with [Moise] Kean and Pogba. Paul is going through a difficult time and I often go to his house to make sure he is okay. He’s a great person. [Federico] Chiesa and [Dusan] Vlahovic also helped me a lot. Then of course McKennie was fundamental. He constantly brings positive energy both on and off the pitch.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Weah is currently away on international duty and will be hoping to get more game time under his belt, while earning a 35th cap, when the USMNT take in a friendly date with Ghana on Tuesday evening.
