'What women's football has become' - Alisha Lehmann wowed by 'amazing' turnout for Arsenal vs Chelsea as Aston Villa star attends record-breaking WSL contest

A new Women's Super League attendance record was set during Arsenal's 4-1 win over Chelsea, and Aston Villa's Alisha Lehmann couldn't be more pleased.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    As Jonas Eidevall's team took on league leaders Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, they posted a WSL record attendance of 59,042. The packed-out stadium definitely tipped the scales towards the home side as the Gunners battered Emma Hayes' side on the night thanks to goals from Beth Mead, Amanda Ilestedt, and a brace by Alessia Russo. Aston Villa star Lehmann was also in the stands, and took to Instagram to highlight how much women's football has progressed over the years. She wrote: "What women's football has become. This is amazing."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Despite the win, the Gunners remain second in the WSL table behind Chelsea, however, they are now on equal points with the Blues. The two sides sit on 22 points after nine games this season and with Hayes on her way out to coach the USWNT at the end of the season, her team will still be looking to beat this Arsenal team to the title.

    The previous record for WSL attendance was also held by the north London team, who drew 54,115 for their home match against Liverpool in October of this year.

    Five of the six WSL matches that have drawn crowds of more than 40,000 have taken place at the Emirates, as per ESPN. A sell-out crowd of 60,063 witnessed the club's Champions League semi-final matchup against Wolfsburg last season.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LEHMANN?

    Lehmann's Aston Villa sit 10th in the league at the moment, and will play their next game against Durham at home in the WSL Cup on Wednesday, December 13. Arsenal, meanwhile, will face Tottenham in a crucial derby clash three days later.
