While Chelsea's march to the Premier League title seems like a return to the status quo after the Leicester City miracle of 2015-16, there are a few similarities between last year's champions and their almost-certain successors.

Both rose from a position a long way down the table, for starters. Chelsea's decline under Jose Mourinho last season was of course, a shocking anomaly rather than what was expected, as was the case for Leicester, but it is nevertheless remarkable just how rapidly and drastically they have turned it around under Antonio Conte.

They have both shown that confidence and momentum can go a long way, and a lack of European football interrupting your schedule can play a big part in building it. One or two clubs and individual matches might have interrupted Leicester and Chelsea's rhythm, but not enough to really kick them out of it.

Then there is their attention to defending and ability to keep clean sheets and grind out results. Leicester dismissed the modern notion of full-backs as virtual wingers and created a four-man block at the back, while Chelsea added an extra centre-back in order to allow their wide defenders to rampage up and down the pitch.

And there is N'Golo Kante. Neither team could have played the way they did without the little ball of energy crashing around the middle of the field, shutting down attacks before they reached his own half and contributing more poise and smart passing in attack than he is given credit for.

Despite the possibility of six teams finishing with 70 points or more this season and Tottenham's admirable efforts, it has not been much of a race for a while. Chelsea, whether on Friday night or a little later, will be English champions for the sixth time.
