Maritzburg United playmaker Lebohang Maboe ready to snub Kaizer Chiefs

Reported Kaizer Chiefs target Lebohang Maboe says he is ready to reject offers from local clubs and stay put at Maritzburg United.

The attacking midfielder had a great 2017/18 season which saw him play an important role in helping the Team of Choice finish fourth on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) standings and reach the Nedbank Cup final. 

Maboe scooped the Nedbank Cup’s Player of the Tournament and Most Promising Player accolades at the PSL Awards on Tuesday as a reward for his outstanding performances during the recent campaign.

Chiefs are reportedly keen to sign him ahead of the PSL July-August transfer window, but Maboe has insisted that he will only leave Maritzburg for an overseas club.

“Yaah… I won’t stay at Maritzburg forever but from here I want to go overseas. The only offer that I and the team will consider is overseas,” Maboe told Times Live. 

“I still have a contract with Maritzburg that I have to honour‚ so I will still be with the team next season,” he continued.

The 23-year-old playmaker discussed his relationship with his father Sidwell Maboe, who is a former Orlando Pirates player.

“He just motivates a lot. He just says 'mfanami (my boy) just stay humble and keep working hard izinto zizozenzakalela (things will just happen automatically)',” the tricky player added.

“He also reminds me that I need to keep on praying. He says ‘Pray and everything will then take care of itself’,” Maboe, who still has one-year left on his contract with Maritzburg United, concluded. 

Maboe made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Team of Choice during the 2017/18 season - netting five goals in the process.

He joined the Team of Choice from National First Division (NFD) outfit Mbombela United prior to the start of the 2016/17 season.
