<p>During a pre-season clash with Manchester United last summer, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/paul-mullin-feared-for-his-life-after-lung-injury/blt7025792fef1b604f" target="_blank">Mullin had a nasty collision with goalkeeper Nathan Bishop</a> - now at Sunderland - before later being given oxygen and taken to hospital. However, the striker said it was a "non-negotiable" that he walked off the field rather than being stretchered off as that would unnecessarily scare his family. WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>He said on the first episode of season three's '<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/welcome-to-wrexham-release-date-watch-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-documentary-tv-series/blt588621d689775dae" target="_blank">Welcome to Wrexham</a>': "I was trying to tell the physios that I cannot sit on a stretcher, I've got family watching back home it's the early hours of the morning. If I sit on that or lie on that with an oxygen mask on, they're going to be even more worried than they are now. I should never have done that, but I had to with my family watching. It's just something that's non-negotiable for me."</p>

WHAT PAUL MULLIN SAID

<p>While Mullin made a full recovery and returned to <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/wrexham-promotion-league-one-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-forest-green-rovers-mk-dons-barrow/bltc8ffdccfc813e664" target="_blank">help fire Wrexham into League One,</a> the forward admitted after the incident that he feared for his life. While his team-mates returned to Wales, Mullin recovered out in Los Angeles.</p><p><span></span><span>''</span><span>I was trying to breathe in but nothing was happening. I couldn’t get air into my lungs. That’s when I knew it was bad. In that struggle for breath, with my lips turning blue, I accepted that this could be it for me. That’s how it felt. I couldn’t breathe properly for a few minutes,'' Mullin told<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/paul-mullin-feared-for-his-life-after-lung-injury/I%20was%20trying%20to%20breathe%20in%20but%20nothing%20was%20happening.%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20get%20air%20into%20my%20lungs.%20That%E2%80%99s%20when%20I%20knew%20it%20was%20bad.%20In%20that%20struggle%20for%20breath,%20with%20my%20lips%20turning%20blue,%20I%20accepted%20that%20this%20could%20be%20it%20for%20me.%20That%E2%80%99s%20how%20it%20felt.%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20breathe%20properly%20for%20a%20few%20minutes.%20%20I%20was%20thinking%20about%20my%20little%20boy,%20Albi.%20I%20hate%20being%20away%20from%20him%20and%20my%20partner%20Mollie%20for%20too%20long%20but%20I%20had%20told%20myself%20it%20was%20only%20two%20weeks%20and%20that%20I%E2%80%99d%20be%20back%20home%20soon.%20It%20ended%20up%20being%20much%20longer,%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20so%20thankful%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20worse.">The Athletic</a> in August.</span></p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Following their promotion from League Two, Mullin and his Wrexham team-mates will enjoy some time off before returning to the United States in July for some friendlies against Bournemouth, Chelsea and Vancouver Whitecaps.</p>
