Stepped in when Khune was sent off and started the famous victory over France, Josephs stepped into a player-assistant role at AmaZulu after hanging up his gloves.He was recently dismissed from the club, and told local media that he didn’t know why he was fired by AmaZulu.

Third-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup, Walters retired three years ago and has launched his own self-named goalkeeper academy since retiring.The ex-stopper is also U-19 coach at the BSIFootballAcademy and has contributed some analysis on SABC Sport.

Shuaib Walters

South Africa’s skipper at the 2010 tournament, Mokoena spent time in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth before returning to South African football.After retirement, he took a role in Moroka Swallows’ scouting department, and was subsequently employed as Cape TownCity assistant manager.He’s launched the Aaron Mokoena Football Academy in the Vaal, and took the Uefa Executive Master for International Players course, having already completed his Uefa C License.

Left Mamelodi Sundowns for Belgian side Lierse in the aftermath of the World Cup, and later returned to the PSL with Kaizer Chiefs.He prepared for lift after football by taking a degree in Political Science and Social Studies from WitsUniversity, and was subsequently employed at a media agency called Brand Arc.The four-time PSL champion also runs his own charity, the Pa Gaxa Foundation, which runs various community-focused charities across South Africa.

Siboniso Gaxa

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur who was part of SuperSport United’s Golden Generation.He was still active in the PSL until last year, after returning to SSU, but called time on his career late last year.The former defender was on SuperSport punditry duty for South Africa’s recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifying defeat by Morocco.

Bongani Khumalo

The right-back passed away in November 2020 after being involved in a car accident in KwaZulu-Natal.The 33-year-old had been on the books of AmaZulu—on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns—at the time of his death.

Anele Ngcongca

He finished his career with Bidvest Wits in 2014, and has subsequently been seen as a pundit, where he brings his expansive professional experience to bear when assessing the stars of today.

Matthew Booth

Left-back who never truly realised his potential, Masilela nonetheless featured in La Liga for Getafe.Still going strong at 37, he was released by AmaZulu at the end of the PSL season, and it remains to be seen where the veteran full-back goes next.

Tsepo Masilela

Masilela’s backup at the World Cup, Thwala retired in 2013 after failing to recover fully from an ankle injury.

Lucas Thwala

An unused squad member during the World Cup, he retired in 2016 after struggling with injury, and was latterly seen coaching his own self-named club in the South African lower leagues.

Siyabonga Sangweni

Yeye, who turned 39 on Thursday, was a key figure in the Bafana side at the 2010 World Cup—and in truth, he was at the peak of his powers at the time.Then midway through a trophy-laden spell with Kaizer Chiefs, Letsholonyane retired in 2021 following a spell with TS Galaxy, and was recently seen covering the Multichoice Diski Challenge in a broadcasting role with SuperSport.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane

Tenacious midfielder who enjoyed success in Russia with Rubin Kazan, Sibaya was involved in Bafana’s famous victory over France.He retired in 2013 after a spell with Moroka Swallows, and subsequently embarked on a coaching career—notably with a spell overseeing SuperSport United’s reserve side.

MacBeth Sibaya

One of Bafana’s all-time greats, Shabba’s strike against Mexico in the World Cup 2010 opener was one of the greatest moments in the nation’s footballing history.In truth, he didn’t quite build on that promise—despite a brief stint in Turkey with BB Erzurumspor—and has been a free agent since 2021, and his release by AmaZulu.

Siphiwe Tshabalala

Responsible for the assist to set up Tshabalala for his stunning effort against Mexico, Dikgacoi is one of several members of the squad to have tested British football, having featured for Fulham, CardiffCity and Crysta lPalace.He launched his own sports apparel business—IsaDi Sports Apparel—and was recently awarded a contract to supply the Namibia national team.

Kagisho Dikgacoi

Featured in all three World Cup games, and enjoyed spells with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City before retiring.Since finishing his playing career, the playmaker has taken up some coaching at youth level, and continues to give his opinion on major issues in the PSL.

Teko Modise

Arguably the finest South African player of his generation, Pienaar has entered into the world of coaching since his retirement, and has spent some time earning his stripes with former club Ajax.He was also given an ambassadorial role at former club Everton in 2018, and recently announced his desire to one day coach Bafana.

Steven Pienaar

One of the elder statesmen in the squad back in 2010, Nomvethe went on playing until 2020—into his early 40s—when he last featured for Uthongathi.The PSL’s all-time top scorer spent this season as AmaZulu’s assistant coach.

Siyabonga Nomvethe

While Khuboni’s international career didn’t last too long after his World Cup showing, he’s nonetheless enjoyed an extensive club career since, notably for Golden Arrows.The 36-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by Uthongathi.

Thanduyise Khuboni

Already a veteran at the time of his appearance against Uruguay in 2010, Moriri went on to play for seven more years—ending his career with a stint at Highlands Park.He returned to the club with which he’s most readily associated—Mamelodi Sundowns—to take up a coaching role with the reserves, and has also worked with South Africa’s youth sides.

Surprise Moriri

Netted the winner in the 2-1 triumph over France—arguably South Africa’s greatest performance at the World Cup—and retired nine years after the World Cup.‘Killer’ has spent time involving himself in youth development initiatives since retirement, and was recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the North West Sports Recognition Awards gala.

Katlego Mphela

Parker is coming to the end of an 11-year spell with Chiefs, having been released by Amakhosi at the season’s end.During that glorious spell—which began one year after the World Cup—he’s won a pair of PSL titles, the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8.He’s been rumoured to be set to take up a role behind the scenes with Chiefs, although could another PSL club tempt him to sign a new deal to extend his playing career?
