Rooney's managerial stint with Plymouth lasted just six months as the Championship side announced the departure of the ex-United forward on the final day of 2024. The Pilgrims managed to win just four matches in 23 outings in the Championship under Rooney and are rock bottom of the league table. After the 39-year-old finally parted ways with the club, a brutal fan song dedicated to him went viral on social media.

WHAT THE FAN SAID
A Plymouth fan with the X handle @jbarkilo shared a brutal song designed to rub sale in Rooney's wounds, with the lyrics: "Rooney was our leader, The worst coach of all time, That's by every metric, No 'underlying' shine, Could've had [Liam] Roseniooor, His wages were too steep, But that's just Plymouth Argyle, We do it on the cheap, Allez allez allez."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Fans have been vocal on social media ever since Plymouth's bombshell announcement on Rooney. Most of them labelled Rooney as a terrible head coach while it has also been suggested he should consider leaving football management. The former England and United star's coaching track record does not make for good reading, with a mixed spell at Derby followed up by abject failure at D.C. United, Birmingham City and now Plymouth.

WHAT NEXT FOR WAYNE ROONEY?
Rooney has worked as a pundit in the past and while he was voted as the UK's least-favourite Euro 2024 pundit in the summer, he could consider going back to the Television studios instead of continuing his career as a football manager. Meanwhile, Plymouth will play their first game without Rooney on the touchline against Bristol City on New Year's Day.
