Sam Surridge and Brian Schwake lift Nashville SC to first U.S. Open Cup win in dramatic result over Austin FC

    TELL ME MORE

Nashville took the lead early. Hany Mukhtar, provided the necessary moment, latching onto Jacob Shaffelburg's flick on and smashing home at the near post in the 17th minute. Austin were well positioned for an equalizer almost immediately when they were awarded a penalty in the 21st minute - but Myrto Uzuni squandered his effort from the spot.

The home side eventually got their equalizer, though. Uzuni made up for his spot-kick miss with a clever finish through Brian Schwake's legs off a searching feed from Ilie Sanchez right before the half time break. The game swung again in the second half. This time, it was Surridge capitalizing, smashing home from the penalty spot in the 60th minute. The visitors held off late pressure to secure a famous win.

With the win, Nashville claimed their first trophy as a franchise. They began play in 2020, and came close after facing Inter Miami in the 2023 Leagues Cup final. That night, they lost on penalties. Here, they got over the line.

    THE MVP

There were plenty of good performers for Nashville. Mukhtar was up to his usual tricks as a roaming No.10. Surridge grabbed the winner. But this was Brian Schwake's night. The goalkeeper tallied seven saves, denied a penalty, and was a commanding presence all evening. Without him, Nashville might have ended up on the wrong side of the result.

  • Myrto Uzuni, Austin FCImagn

    THE BIG LOSER

Austin FC can leave this one feeling pretty good about their performance as a whole. But it was a night to forget for Myrto Uzuni. He may have bagged an equalizing goal shortly before half time, but his penalty miss might have been costly in the scope of the contest.

  • WHAT COMES NEXT?

Nashville will enjoy the moment. This was, ultimately, a deserved win. But the season continues for both sides. Austin FC face a struggling St. Louis CITY this weekend as they look to lock in a playoff spot. Nashville, meanwhile, will travel to Montreal. A win and kind results elsewhere could see them secure a home playoff game.
