Revealed: The major problem facing Arsenal in their transfer pursuit of Athletic Club & Spain star Nico Williams

Arsenal are one of the many teams interested in signing the Spain international this year following his starring roles in La Liga and Euro 2024 last summer. The Gunners are reportedly willing to match the winger's release clause in an attempt to sign him this month, while Barcelona and Bayern Munich are said to be after him, too.

However, convincing the 22-year-old to leave the Basque club in favour of a switch to north London is a complicated one for the Gunners as The Mirrorreports that he will demand high wages ensure he is one of Europe's highest-paid players. Due to the tax differences between Bilbao and England, the Premier League team may have to offer more than £300,000 per week in order to match his demands.

Williams has been a first-team regular at Athletic Club again this season and has managed two goals and five assists across La Liga and the Europa League, lifting his side to fourth in the Spanish top flight and second in the continental competition.

A move in the January transfer window seems unlikely for Williams, but he could opt to swap his current side for one capable of challenging for league and European titles in the summer.
