'It has been a privilege' - Rachel Daly receives heart-warming message from Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman after shock decision to call time on glittering international career

Daly called time on her Lionesses career on Wednesday morning, just hours after playing in her country's 2-0 Euro 2025 qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland. The 32-year-old admitted this was an "extremely difficult" decision, but she can look back on her 84 caps and 16 goals for her country with "immense gratitude". After her team-mates paid tribute to the forward, England boss Wiegman has followed suit, describing the veteran as the most "versatile" player she has ever worked with.

In an Instagram post, the Lionesses boss wrote: "Two different games this week. Hoped for more on Friday (in the 1-1 draw with Sweden), happy with the 3 points yesterday (Tuesday). Wembley as always was great, and the stadium in Dublin also had such a special atmosphere. Many thanks to the English fans who travelled to support us. Looking forward to our next matches!

"Also, I would like to pay tribute to Rachel Daly. Rachel has been an incredible part of our story and the history we’ve made together. It has been a privilege to work with her. I have never worked with a player so versatile, always with a smile on her face, always bringing energy, and trying to do her best for the team. She’ll be missed not just by me but all the other staff members, players, and of course the fans."

Daly has ended her England career after struggling for minutes under Wiegman of late, with the attacker not starting any of the Lionesses' last eight games. For many, this decision may seem a bit premature, as she still may still have several good years of football ahead of her, but the former Houston Dash star knows what's best for her career.

After rounding off her career with a cameo against Ireland, Daly will return to Women's Super League action when Aston Villa travel to title hopefuls Chelsea next Wednesday at Kingsmeadow.
