Monaco's top 10 most expensive player signings

  • Geoffrey Kondogbia Monaco 2014-15Getty

    10Geoffrey Kondogbia | €20m | Sevilla | 2013

After starting his club career at Lens, Geoffrey Kondogbia made his Ligue 1 debut in November 2010, coming on as a late substitute against Lyon.

After making three Ligue 1 appearances in the 2010-11 season, Kondogbia and Lens were relegated to Ligue 2.

The Frenchman stayed for one season in the second tier before Sevilla snapped him up in the summer of 2012, but he spent just 12 months in Spain before joining Monaco for €20m.

In his time at the principality club, Kondogbia helped them finish second in Ligue 1 and return to the Champions League after a decade-long absence.

In 2015, he moved to Inter and then Valencia before signing for Atletico Madrid in 2020.

  • Pietro Pellegri Monaco 2018-19Getty

    9Pietro Pellegri | €20.9m | Genoa | 2017

At the age of 15 years and 280 days, Pietro Pellegri equalled the record as the youngest ever Serie A debutant when he featured for Genoa in 2016.

He then became the first player born in the 21st century to score in Serie A when he found the net in May 2017.

Pellegri's performances at Genoa were so good that Monaco agreed to pay €20.9m for his services in January 2018.

After making just 22 appearances in three years, however, he was loaned to AC Milan with the option to make the deal permanent. However, he made only six appearances for the first team and his loan deal was terminated in January 2022.

Towards the end of the January window, Torino signed the striker on loan before signing him outright the following summer.

  • Tielemans Monaco Leipzig 091317Getty Images

    8Youri Tielemans | €25m | Anderlecht | 2017

In 2016, the media were going gaga over an incredible midfield prospect from Anderlecht called Youri Tielemans.

Tielemans became the youngest Belgian to ever play in the Champions League at 16 years and 148 days when he featured for Anderlecht against Olympiacos in October 2013.

He was part of the squad which won the 2013-14 Pro League title and also won the Belgian Young Player of the Year award in each of his first two seasons.

Monaco decided to gamble on Tielemans in May 2017, after he turned 20 and agreed to pay Anderlecht a €25m fee.

Tielemans was a huge hit at Monaco before he moved to Leicester in January 2019 on loan before making the deal permanent that summer for €45m.

  • Joao Moutinho MonacoGetty Images

    7Joao Moutinho | €25m | Porto | 2013

After spending a total of nine years playing for two of Portugal's biggest clubs in Sporting CP and Porto, Joao Moutinho decided to move to Monaco in the summer of 2013 along with his team-mate at Porto, James Rodriguez.

Monaco parted ways with €25m for the midfielder and he impressed right from his debut when he set up both of his team's goals in their 2-1 win at Marseille in September.

Moutinho would later go on to lift Monaco's eighth Ligue 1 trophy in the 2016-17 season and then left a year later when he decided to move to the Premier League with Wolves.

  • Keita Balde Monaco Caen

    6Keita Balde | €30m | Lazio | 2017

After spending six years between 2005 to 2011 at Barcelona's La Masia academy, Keita Balde left without playing a senior game as he was punished by the club for a practical joke of placing an ice-cube in a team-mate's bed.

Barcelona loaned him to UE Cornella, where he scored 47 goals in a season before turning down the chance to return to Camp Nou amid interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Lazio signed him in 2013 and he established himself as a starter at the Serie A team. His best performances came in the Derby della Capitale against Roma where he scored a double in Lazio's 3-1 win in 2017, becoming the first Lazio player to do so since Roberto Mancini in the 1998-99 season.

Later that summer, Monaco in for him andagreed to pay €30m and handed him a five-year contract.

Balde was sent on loan to Inter in 2018 and Sampdoria in 2020 before joining Cagliari the following year and Spartak Moscow in 2022 in free transfers.

  • Aleksandr Golovin Monaco

    5Aleksandr Golovin | €30m | CSKA Moscow | 2018

Aleksandr Golovin was the star for Russia in the 2018 World Cup and his displays attracted tremendous interest from some top European clubs.

Monaco, however, were quick in their approach and handed over €30m to CSKA Moscow in July 2018.

Golovin has featured more than 100 times for Monaco since 2018 and has come up with some decent performances, none of which top the treble that he scored in a 4-3 away win against Nimes that made him the first Russian to score a hat-trick in Ligue 1.

  • Gelson Martins, MonacoGetty

    4Gelson Martins | €30m | Atletico Madrid | 2019

Monaco signed Atletico Madrid flop Gelson Martins in January 2019 on loan until the end of that season.

Martins instantly got accustomed to the team and French league, prompting Monaco to sign him permanently in July for €30m on a five-year deal.

The Portugal international has played over 120 games for Monaco since his arrival.

He also got involved in controversies, however. In one game at Nimes in February 2020, Martins repeatedly pushed referee Mikael Lesage in retaliation for his team-mate Tiemoue Bakayoko's red card.

This led to Martins being sent off, too, and eventually being hit with a six-month suspension while Monaco lost the game 3-1.

  • Wissam Ben Yedder Monaco 2021-22Getty

    3Wissam Ben Yedder | €40m | Sevilla | 2019

After making a name for himself in the French league with Toulouse, Wissam Ben Yedder moved to La Liga side Sevilla in 2016 for a €9.5m fee.

After memorable performances for them over his three year spell, Monaco agreed to pay €40m for his signature in the summer of 2019.

Ben Yedder penned a five-year deal with the club and has gone on to make over 140 appearances for them, scoring an incredible 82 goals.

He was also the top scorer in Ligue 1 in the 2019-20 season.

  • #DepartL1 Falcao MonacoGetty Images

    2Radamel Falcao | €43m | Atletico Madrid | 2013

Monaco broke their transfer record twice on July 1, 2013, first with the signing of Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid for €43m.

The Colombian maestro had made 91 appearances for Atletico, scoring 70 goals and came with the kind of experience that Monaco needed to succeed in Europe.

Falcao played in 108 Ligue 1 games for Monaco, scoring 65 goals. His six years at the club included two season-long loans at Manchester United and Chelsea.

The former Porto striker helped Monaco win the Ligue 1 title in 2016-17 when he scored 21 goals in 29 league games.

In 2019, he left Monaco to join Galatasaray before moving to Rayo Vallecano in 2021.

  • James Rodriguez Monaco 2013-14Getty

    1James Rodriguez | €45m | Porto | 2013

After excelling in his career at youth level at Banfield in Argentina, James Rodriguez moved to Porto in 2010 for €7.35m.

In the three years that followed, James won the Primeira Liga, Europa League, Portuguese Cup and Portuguese Super Cup in Porto's historic 2010-11 season.

The following season, he won the Portuguese Golden Ball award, becoming the second Colombian after Radamel Falcao to receive the honour.

By 2012-13, top clubs from around the world had started circling around James, with Porto famously rejecting Manchester United's approach for him.

In the summer of 2013, it was announced that James had joined Monaco for a club record €45m.

Monaco's record signing would go on to succeed in his first and only season at the club before coming up with brilliant performances for Colombia at the 2014 World Cup, thus catching the eye of Real Madrid, who signed him for €75m in July 2014.
