The 2021-22 season was all about proving that the previous&nbsp;campaign&nbsp;which was Mduduzi Mdantsane's first full-term at Cape Town City was no fluke. The man nicknamed Mdu was arguably the Citizens' most influential player in the recent term - scoring important goals having established himself as&nbsp;one of the Premier Soccer League's elite&nbsp;goalscoring midfielders and his exploits earned a maiden Bafana Bafana call-up. Therefore, the Citizens&nbsp;enjoyed one of their best-ever seasons since the club's formation in 2016, under coach&nbsp;Eric Tinkler's tutelage. The former Orlando Pirates coach was able to bring out the best in Mdu who helped the Mother City side reach the MTN8 final after making a good start to the season. City also finished second in the PSL for the first time in the club's history which saw the team qualify for next&nbsp;season's Caf Champions League.

A successful campaign

Mdantsane began the new season by scoring a late-winning goal as City claimed a 2-1 win over AmaZulu FC in the MTN8 quarter-final clash in August last year before scoring his first league goal of the campaign in a 2-1 win over Royal AM 10 days later. Even though City were inconsistent in the league, they were doing well in the MTN8&nbsp;and they managed to reach the final. Mdantsane came into the final against Mamelodi Sundowns in top form having scored against Orlando Pirates and Lamontville Golden Arrows. City frustrated a formidable Sundowns side in the final and ultimately, Tinkler's side lost on penalties in October last year.&nbsp; Mdantsane's exploits earned him a Bafana call-up and he went on to make his international debut against Zimbabwe&nbsp;as South Africa claimed a 1-0 win in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifier at FNB&nbsp; Stadium. The former Baroka FC captain ended the year on a high note scoring three goals in his last six league games of 2021. The Citizens struggled at the turn of the year as they were eliminated from the Nedbank Cup and they were also blowing hot and cold in the league with Mdu having lost his form.&nbsp; However, the left-footed player returned to form in April as he grabbed a brace against his former side Baroka in a 5-1 win, but he was red-carded after picking up two yellow cards in the game. Upon his return from suspension, he helped City hold Sundowns to a 0-0 draw and he scored in a 2-0 win over TS Galaxy. Mdu ended the campaign with 10 goals across all competitions and provided one assist from 32 matches, while also being the highest-scoring midfielder in the PSL with nine goals. He was nominated for the PSL Midfielder of the Season award which was scooped by Andile Jali of Sundowns.

The story of last season

Despite having enjoyed another successful campaign with City, there are no reports nor rumours presently linking Mdantsane with a move away from the 2016 Telkom Knockout champions. The talented playmaker is currently contracted to the Citizens until June 2023 having signed a three-and-a-half-year deal when he joined the club midway through the 2019/20 season after parting ways with Baroka. The Citizens snapped him up on a free transfer after Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele surprisingly terminated his contract and he moved to the&nbsp;legislative capital of South Africa, Cape Town where he has managed to take his career to another level. Prior to joining City, Mdu was constantly linked with Chiefs with the Soweto giants believed to be keen to bring him back to the Naturena headquarters, Chiefs Village, where he was nurtured in the club's academy. However, the bearded player ended up moving to the Citizens and he insisted that he was never contacted by Amakhosi or made aware of the club's interest in his services. Since then Mdantsane has become one of the top players in the local top-flight and he would improve any of the PSL Big Three's squads, Chiefs, Sundowns and Pirates if he joined one of the local football heavyweights. Having released 12 players at the end of the recent season including playmaker Lebogang Manyama, Chiefs are currently in the market for a quality attacking midfielder having been linked&nbsp;Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo of Marumo Gallants, Braga starlet Kobamelo Kodisang as well as Sipho Mbule who has since joined Sundowns. The Glamour Boys should consider making a move for Mdantsane who is familiar with the culture of the Soweto giants. The diminutive player would adapt quickly at the club and also get to work with a familiar face in Arthur Zwane who is a former Chiefs academy coach. That is if Amakhosi manage to convince City chairman John Comitis into selling one of his most prized assets&nbsp;

Any transfer rumours?

Mdantsane has to become more disciplined on the field and avoid needless bookings. He tends to collect unnecessary yellow cards and these have led to him missing matches due to suspension. It is something he needs to cut out from his game.

One big fear for 2022/23

For Mdu to move to a bigger club and challenge for major trophies. The hard-working star has proved to be a great player at the so-called smaller clubs - captaining Baroka to the 2018 Telkom Knockout Cup triumph and reaching the 2021 MTN8 final with City. At the age of 27, he is at the peak of his career and it is time for him to test himself at a big club where there is pressure to perform week in and week out which could help unlock his true potential.

One big hope for 2022/23

Mdantsane impressively scored nine goals from midfield in the 2021-22 season before netting 10 in the recent campaign. The Mpumalanga-born player is growing in leaps and bounds and there is no doubt that he will enjoy another good season, while also cementing his place in the Bafana squad as he is a rare breed in South African football.
