The Bavarians have nailed their recruitment in recent years, pinching the best young talent from across the Bundesliga, while also relying on a handful of homegrown players to build a self-sustaining machine. It was, ultimately, the difference between the two sides in their Champions League knockout tie.

Bayern were able to call on a series of shrewd buys and academy talents to push for a crucial second goal. PSG countered with an imperfect mix of teenagers and mediocre veterans.

These teams are, of course, not built in one transfer window. But there is a clear path for PSG to achieve that kind of model.

And this summer, they might just have the chance. One or more of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi appears poised for a move, while the likes of Sergio Ramos, Juan Bernat and Carlos Soler could also leave.

The Parisians, then, have holes to fill, with both star players and squad depth required. The good news for PSG is they have the financial resources and pedigree to bring in some top players. Manager Christophe Galtier might also be on his way out, and perhaps a new project could lure in some big names.
