On March 14, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi formed part of a travelling Herons squad that headed out of South Florida and over to Kingston. He was named on the bench for a CONCACAF Champions Cup clash with Cavalier FC.
Messi was introduced in the second-half, much to the delight of those in the crowd, and found the target in stoppage-time as he put the seal on a 2-0 victory. Many of those in attendance were only there to see the all-time great in action.
They got what they wanted, while the country as a whole has benefited from playing host to Messi. Minister of state Delano Seiveright has told the Jamaica Observer: “The massive turnout of local and international fans created an electrifying atmosphere that showcased our island as a world-class destination for major sporting events. Beyond the excitement on the field, this match provided a tremendous economic boost, benefiting hotels, Airbnbs, restaurants, bars, attractions, ground transportation operators, and vendors, who all capitalised on the surge of visitors.
“This reinforces the critical role that sports tourism plays in stimulating business activity, job creation, and economic growth, positioning Jamaica as a top-tier hub for global events.”

GettyHe went on to say, with Messi helping to open up a window to the world for a nation that is more associated with top-level cricket: “Global news outlets, sports networks, and digital platforms featured widespread coverage, with Messi’s presence ensuring that Jamaica remained in the international spotlight. This level of global attention is invaluable in strengthening Brand Jamaica - solidifying our country’s reputation as a premier destination for sports, entertainment, and tourism.”
Jamaica has plenty to be excited about at present, with the Reggae Boyz now working under the management of ex-England boss Steve McClaren. They are preparing to welcome former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood into their ranks, having made a positive start to their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
